Woke up at 4A to head out to Boynton inlet with hopes of Kings and Amberjacks on the speed jig. Made a quick call to the overnight fishing authority at Anglins to talk about the plan, getting me fired up and tuned in to the AM.
The plan was to arrive and rig up early so we could take some cars and drop em off at LWP. The idea was to could spend more time drifting N and fishing and less time paddling back and forth.
I met up with YAK ATTACK, FORDHAMRAM1, CAJUN YAKKIN DADDY, DA LUII, NELBAG, FASTRUNNER (Hope I did not leave anyone out)
Set up by 5:40 or so and admired the weird cloud in the predawn sky that we later learned was a result of the latest “to Mars “launch of the PHEONIX by NASA. Some cool pics are here…

So after getting set up on the S side of the inlet (Because the drag to the water was shorter) some of us took cars to the LW PIER parking lot. Returned in time to Sabiki some pilchards in the surf at 1st light. After seeing the place in the light, next time I will set up on the N side and sakibi bait off the seawall )
By the time I had a few doz in the bait bucket, the inlet was awash in fishing vessels motoring about catching bait as well….made for some interesting cross break of waves/wakes on the way to punch out. Took only one over the bow, but in the humidity of the AM, it was almost nice, however we were all glad to be away from the stinkpots and deep when we all got out.
Much to our dismay we had a weird day of a N to S drifting current….AAARGGHHHH!!!!! Which meant a lot of paddling…..S OK though.
On the very first drop in 60 I hit a 2# runner on the bottom with a smaller pilchard…SCORE !!! I immediately hooked him up to the 3/0 rigged with a 2/0 circle on Tyger knottable wire and a stinger in hopes of a big king or Wahoo and tried to paddle hard and catch up to Yak and Fordham who were still headed out to 90-120 mark. Once out there, I dripped a white bucktail tipped with shrimp on my Sahara 4000/ Redbone combo in hopes of a few more runners to put in the well…
Never made it down. All at once Dave, Paul and myself ( as well as 2 guys in a stinkpot a few yards away all yelled “hooked up!” and we all had bonito….it was hard getting through them all day. Problem is that mine was on such light gear, it took a full 20 mins to boat his Ass….Bruised forearms and a bagged fish later( I promised someone some sharkbait

, we were off to fish some more.
I dropped another pilchard to the bottom and started to jig the other rod when the water behind me EXPLODES and a mad, angry Cuda with a mouthful of wired stinger and Runner starts greyhounding and peeling drag off the 3/0….
I am reeling like mad to get the lines up from 120 before the Cuda chews through the Tygerwire ( that stuff is GREAT but not indestructible and I was using only 40#.....)….
Finally got everything in and turned to grab the rod so I could stop the yak from dragging in reverse…lol and started to fight the thing…Finally got him tuckered out after a few nice runs and felt good about tossing the camera to Yak Attack to snap a quick shot. He was so whooped, I even felt OK to reach in ad removed the hook from his massive maw.
Believe me, I made SURE he had NO GREEN left in him before getting him CLOSE to the yak.
Revived him and away he swam. Rest of the day saw a few undersized muttons and some triggers. Then the remoras found us and no jig was safe…lol Also caught a purple chub looking thing with yellow fins…..bout 2-3# fish….I lost a few jigs to clean cuts ( kings! ) but when I ran with ANY wire - they just shut off……
ALL in all a great day and it was cool to meet up with Cajun and the others I have not met before….Yesterday spooled up the Penn750 wity Braid and more tygerwire and will have a sneaky wired speed-jig ready for those picky Kings!!!
Cannot wait till next time we go, I would do it all over again, I mean what is the chances of ANOTHER N to S current?...lol In fact it is high time we did a Anglins to Pompano Pier drift!!!
