Tax time is upon us whats your plan on returns?

Post by phillybass »

I just figured mine and I should a decent return back this year. I'm going to go crazy rebuilding my fishing gear for saltwater. I know I want to get 1 decent shark setup. 2-3 pier setups and 2 boat/ ballooning setups. Plus what I already have I should be set. I need info on what gear to get I've been searching gear out but being in PA I have no way to test anything. I've been looking at the shimano torium 30 for pier setups. thinking 2 of them and a finor 8500 offshore spinning reel for another pier setup. I need help for the boat/ballon setups and the shark setup. I already have someone in mind to make rods for me. Any info will help my price range for a shark reel is up to $500 for ballon/boat reels is $250, pier casting is $200, and pier spinning is $200. That's my price range so any advise is welcome. :D :D :D

I'd recommend the daiwa saltist over the toriums. I've only ever used a torium to cast once before and it did not impress in the least. The daiwa saltist star drag seems better suited to me for its castability and durability on the pier. I also would not recommend a 8000 size spinning reel because its just too big and bulky, I would instead get a 5-6000 sized real that could double as a pitching rod and a bottom rig.

I would get two daiwa saltists or a saltist and an avet just to have a lever and a star drag reel and a 4-5000 sized spinning reel for the pier (stradic, cabo, saltist, etc). Just buy some surf rods and boat/jigging rods and they'll double your utility, this way you wont need to exclusively buy pier and boat combos. You can also balloon almost anything with these conventional reels as well.

Just got a penn peer 209 on ugly stick and a 4/0 senator 113h special on a senator rod both spooled and almost brand new all for 75$, some searching around the internet will save you $$ to buy more gear or other tackle.

I guess that's your opinion, the 209 is worth 20 just for the reel maybe and 40 with rod and the senator combo is worth about 60-75 so I definitely did fine paying 75 for the pair and you haven't seen what condition they are in, at those prices you can't expect new condition, more like wear and tear especially cosmetically but the senator looks/works out of box new and the peer is in just as good condition. Also I don't have to spend any money spooling them with line so I think I made out pretty good.

Black, it's a newer model, I didn't buy vintage ones lol I mean the peer is pushing vintage but they're reputation precedes them and I disagree I think most would have spent about 120-130 for what I got but no biggie I'm happy lol

Lol I'm getting to it, but you should be able to figure out easily I can sell that senator by itself for 60 the rods for 20 each, already a profit and the the peer for 20-30 even if I sold the senator for 50 could still profit

It's straight I'm not trying to say I got a super deal but that's wht I meant hunting around saves money, I paid 45 for the senator combo so it may be $5 less but that's still low price and all the more sabikis, weights or packs of jigs etc. I could buy.... I'd rather bicker about the size of fish we catch with them anyways lol

I've only had experience with the older silver, high speed models. Mine is a 40h or 50h model. It is too big to vertical jig with but great for anything pier or boat side (bottom, chicken rig, live, slow light trolling). I think if you can find one of those in new or near new condition you will find a very good and reliable reel.

Tax return, ha! I haven't seen one of those in years.

I refuse to give Uncle Sam an interest-free loan for a year, so I cut a check every April. I have my allowances pretty well set though so it's usually $100 or less.
