Spinning Reel right hand or left hand?

Post by kblue »

It just could be me... Some people asking if I am left-handed after looking at my spinning reel.
I am right-handed. I configure my "heavy" spinning reels for right hand reeling (left-handy set up) and my light spinning reels for left hand reeling (right-handy set up). When fishing a big fish with heavy spinners, I always reel in my spinner with right hand in the same way as conventional reel (one of a few exceptions would be snook hawking). But when you doing some light jigging where rod motion is important, then I use right hand for jigging and left for reeling in...

Just curious if anyone thought about this?

Ambidextrous. Can you brush your teeth with ease on either hand without difficulty ?

I am not.

but think this way. If you are right-handed, you are using left hand to reel spinner and right hand to reel conventional. So already Ambidextrous ???
I think the reason may be the torque and gear ratio of the reel. Spinner typically has less torque but high speed. It means that when you fight against a decent size of fish, you can't just reel in spinner without cranking while you could with conventional...

But when you have a low-speed high-torque spinners, you can use it like conventional... And less cranking is always better.

I am happy if I make you laughing, Sir
I am also happy to find I am not the only one.

A little surprised though, even flying-reel using right hand winding. (why only spinning using left hand???)

I wasn't laughing at your question. You asked if anyone else was curious about this phenomenon and the first reply was simply "no" which I thought was hilarious. For the record I've never thought about it either.

I always hold the rod in my right and crank with my left. I only purchase conventionals that crank with the left hand. I like to control the fish with my dominant hand the other only goes round in circles.

Wow, you are completely opposite to me...another odd one like me when it comes to reel cranking :toast:

Now, what would sound more odd would be I set the hook by pulling rod up and cranking the reel at the same time.

Another of my species !!!

Maybe, I am 50% ambidextrous. I crank spinning reel with right or left hands depending on type of reel and rod.
But I never tried conventional with left-hand because I don't have one.

When I caught 20LB permit with Raul, I cranked the reel with right hand. He asked if I was left-handed.

I am sure this is who-cares question.
My fundamental curiosity is for right-handed, why reeling spinning reel with left and reeling conventional, fly-rod, bait caster reels with right are considered as normal? why not all right hands? Whatever...Bla Bla Bla
