FWC Snook Workshop, IGFA Daina 1/25

Post by krash »

Snook Workshop @ IGFA Thursday 1/25 6-8Pm, be there to hear and/or speak out and be heard.

http://myfwc.com/marine/workgroups/Snoo ... eeting.pdf

GENERAL SUBJECT MATTER TO BE CONSIDERED: The purpose of the workshop is to review the Commission’s recent snook assessment, and to review the snook workgroup recommendations that include narrowing the current slot, changes to closed seasons, and dropping the Atlantic coast daily bag limit to 1 fish. The recent assessment concluded that snook are not meeting their management goal of 40% spawning potential ratio and increasing fishing effort is contributing to the declining SPR.

Anger is what comes to mind closely followed by dissapointment. I went to the meeting at the IGFA. Where were all the snookers? There were three (3) people from the state.Two(2) newspaper reporters.A couple of tackle dealers.Five or six guides. An FWC officer and I think a grand total of FIVE SNOOKERS. Include me in that count. The night before they had ONE HUNDRED and NINE! You don't want to know, you absence made it quite clear. Imo you guys SUCK!

BF, I have to concur with jighead, I'm one of the few that showed.. don't know all who were there but his count is close.

I can't believe that every inshore guide, tackle shop owner, and a good percentage of us fishermen was not there, but I guess it just shows the actula state of our Snook fishery compared to the Jupiter and North Snook fishery.

It was advertised on FS a couple weeks ago, I should have posted it here then, it was also in the news paper a couple weeks ago. Its also been on the FWC web-site for a while. This meeting was an overview of several other meetings that occur, basically outlining the short-list of options that FWC plans to present, asking your opinion.

I actually feel sorry for the Lisa O. & the other FWC people trying to do the right thing for us and we don't even show. Shame on us...

Couple of the suggested proposal & ideas tossed around...
1) ShoreBound Salt Water License
2) Raise price of Snook Stamp ex. $10.00
3) Squeze Slot size again
4) Bag limt dropped to 1 in Atlantice region
5) Close September

I will do a better job of trying to keep this BF-board posted with updates.

I agree and yes it slipped by me and I regret to have to say I am ashamed for not being there and allowing other things to get my attention.

So lets find a way to get the site involved and keep it involved there is enough people in and out of here to make some what of a showing at these kinds of things.

Sorry for my unattentive actions when something like this needed it.

The FWC snook working group will have a poll up on the site in a few days that YOU the public can participate in. I suggest that you fill it out. I also suggest that you contact your local state rep. The vote in march is for more money for all the things you say you want. If your rep doesn't know there's a good chance they will vote against it. If someone could supply the links to the local reps it would be appreciated.

One of the proposals may affect many of the people that this board caters to. "Boatless Fishing" Currently shorebound salt water anglers are not required to have a saltwater fishing license, unlike fresh water where anyone with a rod & reel is required to have one.

I personally have Fresh & Saltwater plus Snook & Lobster stamps, which I purchase every year whether I take a Snook or Lobster or not.

Sounds like the main proposal they were asking us to get behind will be to require a license for saltwater fishing for everyone and to raise the cost of the Snook Stamp.

snook remedy

Post by Juno Geezer »

I agree that something needs to be fixed, but if the laws were being enforced, it would help. Also, I've seen a__holes catch breeder sized fish and simply toss them 25+ feet back into the water. I seldom keep snook, usually one or two a season. love to catch small ones on my mackerel tackle.

Linesider your story is different only because the meeting was in broward and not dade. If you had left your store in the gables lets say at 5pm you would have arrived late and miserable. I too have been working 7 tweleves and managed to make the meeting. It was 15 minutes from my place. I was not really speaking to you as an indivigual(?),how about the thousands of snookers in north dade, broward and south palmbeach countys. Not every one of them had a conflict. It's like Greenday says "you're just too ------ lazy!" This past summer on the beach just before snook season opened there was an easy 50 fishers at Dania/John U. Lloyd where the hell where they thursday night? How about all the boaters that fished that same beach? Sad it's just sad.

I posted contact information links for all of the Florida House & Senate members.

It can be found at:
viewtopic.php?p=22957#22957

Also the link for the Florida State government. Through it, you can get to any department of our State Government.

Follow the links and you can contact your Senate or House representative, get contact information, send an email, provide your opinion on the "snook issue", or invite them to your next social gathering. :)

It's up to you on how you use the information.

Enforcement was a subject discussed, a local FWC officer was present and said call whne you see a violation but they can't always come, but they do investigate reoccurring events. If you can get description, license tag# and report detailed information they can follow up. The enforcement budget is funded by Licenses and Stamps, you want more enforcement we need tp push for the Saltwater License for anyone who fishes in salt water.

The salt water license requirement will help all salt water species.
