Whats the coolest thing you have pulled from the water?

Post by Permit53 »

For me it was a few 20 dollar bills floating by the Lake Worth pier, but other than that i love to pull up a wade of line, lures, and weights.
Fish like its the last cast you will ever make.

I found a Civil War cannonball when I was wade fishing the Potomac River where I grew up in Virginia...it was the middle of the summer during a drought, and the river was at record low levels and very clear, so you could wade to areas that were normally 6 feet or deeper. I saw it on the bottom, and lugged it 2 miles back to my car in my backpack...damn thing weighs about 25 lbs.

Reel'ed in an old trolling reel, Penn I believe it was. That's about the only out of the ordinary thing i've pulled up.

We lived in west Hollywood around Sheridan and 441 when i was in elementary school.

Anyways me and my buddies would swim at the local lake "rock pit" which is now that park at Sheridan and 95.

We one day had a diving contest, It was very deep i made it to the bottom and found my first Fishing rod and reel "Brand new"..Thus was the start of me Fishing... :reeling:

nice way to start MOJO. My brother and I got our start after his snoopy rod was ripped into the water. Guess we were just curious as to what would pull a rod into the water.

An old clay pot I found in a spring while cave diving in North Florida. The Natural History Museum in Gainesville figures it was made between 300-700AD. The bottom is busted out. They tell me it (the busted bottom) may have been part of a ceremony the Indians did once a year (or so) where they used a staff to break out the bottoms so they could not be used any longer. I figure some little kid was playing with his moms pots and pans and broke it, mom got mad and threw it into the spring...out of sight out of mind :)

I caught a Shakespear rod/reel combo with a dead mangove ( about 15 inches long) still on the hook at Ch 5. The rod must have been in the water less than a week yet i dont know how the fish wasn't devoured. I cleaned up the rod/reel and know use it as a loaner rod for friends that join me on fishing trips :)

Snagged line that I proceeded to bring in. Had a handful of line when I was done and a live grover. He thanked me when I let 'em go.

Mine was a plastic bag with a cat fish in it. This was fishing on the little Wichita River in Texas maybe in 91-92.

About 25 yrs ago or so I was fishing the Sea Legs with my cousin and uncle. We were bottom fishing on a night trip. Jack was the captain then. About halfway thru our trip I feel as if I have caught the real estate. I could not get an inch let alone reel all the way in. My uncle took the rod and immediatly said that I have caught the bottom of the ocean. After trying to reel up my uncle gained a few feet, then some more. He reeled as hard as he could and after a long time passed he got the rig up. It seemed I caught huge shell that you needed two hands to hold. The mate put the shell on the bench in the spot we were fishing. We continued to fish. After a little while I looked over at the shell and seen an octopus fall out of it!!! That was cool to me at that time and I still talk about it (as you can see) My uncle gave it to Captain Jack.

Man did that thing pull  The funny thing was that we had joked about hooking a bucket up to someone's shark rod while they were asleep about 10 minutes before that. Next thing I know, my 6/0 was going off and lo and behold, Whodey's down bucket had frayed off on the other side of the bridge, drifted under and snagged my line. I guess the joke was on me.

Dont know if this counts. I was fishing the Swansboro bluewater tournament with two friends and their dad. We released 3 rat blues, and a white. Getting ready to head in the last line we had out was a flat line with a squid daisy chain teaser on it. Reeled it in to the leader swivel, and as I was pullin it in the boat I snatched it up over the side and 60lbs of hoo followed it into the boat, it almost got my throat. That fish was HOT, 60lbs of angry toothy critter!!!!!!! Im scrambling up the tuna tower over one buddy, my other buddy standing in the fightin chair, and his dad is laughin as hard as he freaking could from the controls. Needless to say we had wahoo salad that night for dinner!

I got 1 more. Where I grew up was on the Chowan River, and Albemarle sound in NC. The Navy and Marine fighter jets from south VA and Cherry Point used to do practice bombing runs in the sound. My cousin and I were fishing crabpots on a balmy August morning. Pulled one in and it had a dummy/smoke tracer bomb hung in it. I knew what it was being a recently discharged Marine, My cousin did not. Before I could say anything he was in the water heading for the bank. I used it for a jon boat anchor for years till I lost it in Lake Gaston.

:biglaugh: This reminds me of the time my friends dad who is one of those old crazy war vets was using a dead grenade as a sinker. I told him to use more reasonable things, but like normal he refused to do it any other way then his. As my friends dad went to the cooler to grab a beer he told my buddy John to reel in the line to check if the bait was still on. Needless to say after he saw the grenade on the line he got all paranoid and cut the line. It didn't sit too well with the ole war vet and in the end Johnny went over the edge looking for this "prized" sinker.
