Closely related snapper, like dog and schoolmaster, can hybridize... this fish has characteristics of both so who knows.

It is a Dog. The easiest way to tell Dogs and Schoolmasters apart is by the white triangle under the eye, Dogs have them, Schoolmasters don't.

Stripes are not a reliable source of ID for fish. Look at his picture, and you will notice the white triangle under the eye. Only Dog snappers have that, schoolmasters do not. Many snapper species will develop different color variations as they mature, which would explain the stripes, however the white triangle under the eye is unique only to dog snapper.

8) I think you and I are wasting our time trying to tell them.

I say dog.
Better than grovers in my opinion esp. if cooked fresh.
Nice catch either way.
I dream of a better tomorrow... where chickens can cross roads and not have their motives questioned

Limited out on grovers in a matter of an hour. Caught some snappers that were very colorful but with a spot on the tail

Meat is very lean and have to cook it like a stew to make the meat tender. Has a little gamey taste.
The Judge asked the prostitute, "At what point did you realize you were raped?"
The prostitute replied (wiping away tears), "When the check bounced."
