Morning of Glory! (Bonefish, Tarpon, Snook) Report 7/29/10

Post by Tex@OIP »

Launched at 5:50.

At 6:05 I spotted 3 tailers and they were within casting distance of me...it was still DARK. By the time I casted they were literally 15ft from me...I felt like I was being watched by T-Rex...I was so still and quiet. THUMP! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.....This freakin bone took me all over the place....I had a giant loop of line going all over the flats....I reeled as fast as I could and could not catch him. Finally the fight started to calm down and I worked him back to the kayak. I reached out for my very first bonefish to scoop him up in the yak. This fish was BIG...Im guessing 31-32". Right as I extend my arm the FREAKIN hook pulled. OMG! I was so devastated. I am on my 15th trip for bonefish and this was the second one I hooked and lost. Seriously considered leaving but who was I kidding.

At 7:45 I hooked another Bone! This one was smaller but third time is a charm right? I survived the initial craziness and I was working him back to the kayak...I could see him plain as day and he dug down in the grass...guess what happend! PLUP...hook pulled again!!!! At this point I am about to break everything I own!

Now I decide everything that I have read and all the pros using those darn worm hooks to rig the shrimp weedless are idiots. I cut off that hook with the tiny barb and tie on a trusty Mustad Circle...now we are in business.

At 8:00 I hooked my THIRD bonefish of the day! I never in a million years thought I would hook 3 in one day. This fish was a crazy fight as well as he flirted with disater by weaving through all the crab pots on his 3 blistering runs! I worked the fish back to the kayak fully expecting to lose him because that is all I know. He got closer and closer and he was finally with in arms reach. The moment of truth...I scooped him up and placed him in the kayak and started screaming!!!!!! Finally!!!! I stared at him in awe for like 20 seconds and then began the quick photo op. Man what a freakin day! Its moments like this one that keep me going through all the driving...being tired...all the dissapointment, for that one moment!
He measured out at 29" and he was THICK! Anybody got an idea on weight? I was thinking like 8lbs. Took some quick photos and revived him for a bit...he swam off good and it was a thing of beauty!

Finally. Thats was a very large monkey on my back.

Now I just need a big fat Permit!

Here are the Snook and Tarpon I caught on 7/26. I also lost a monster Poon that was probably 90.

Patience and hard work rewarded you for sure. Being it your first bonefish as well...that thing is huge! Great report...looks awful sunny out there :nilly:
Also for some reason it says for 2 photos "this photo is currently unavailable"...

Great job on the Bones. :toast:

The prostitute replied (wiping away tears), "When the check bounced."

It's the third, right above your tarpon pick. But it seems like you didn't mean to even post a pic there I think...lol.

You have to love a great day of fishing when there are so many not so great days in which we get up at the crack of dawn. Great catch and report.
