From that site: "Once oil gets into the Loop Current, the 1 - 2 mph speed of the current should allow the oil to travel the 500 miles to the Florida Keys in 10 - 20 days. Portions of the Loop Current flow at speed up to 4 mph, so the transport could be just 4 - 5 days. It now appears likely that the first Florida beaches to see oil from the spill will be in the Lower Florida Keys, not in the Panhandle."

Not good.

....the coast of Southwest Florida from Tampa Bay to the Everglades is a "Forbidden Zone" for surface-based transport of ocean water to the coast, and is probably not at risk from this week's Loop Current oil. The northwest coast of Cuba east of Havana and the coast of Southeast Florida from the Keys to West Palm Beach are at the most risk.

Latest word I have heard it that none of the tar balls found in Key West by the fort area are from the oil spill in the Gulf. Latest report from a captain that was in the Dry Tortugas yesterday was no sign of oil .

Coast Guard lab: The tar balls that washed up on the Keys aren't from Gulf spill

The 20 "tar balls" discovered on Key West shores Monday may be a testament to the sad state of the environment, but they are not from the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. Coast Guard labs reported this morning.

A sampling of the sticky globs was flown to the Coast Guard Marine Safety Lab in New London, Conn., Tuesday for testing.

"The results of those tests conclusively show that the tar balls collected from Florida Keys beaches do not match the type of oil from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico," according to a statement issued by the Coast Guard this morning.

So where did they come from?

"The source of the tar balls remains unknown at this time," the statement said.

But just because they aren't from the Gulf spill, should not stop efforts to find and clean up beaches in the Keys, Capt. Pat DeQuattro said.

The Coast Guard was alerted to the tar balls on the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park in Key West around 5:15 p.m.on Monday.

The black blobs ranged in size from three to eight inches in diameter.

Subsequent searches of the shoreline turned up more tar balls at Navy beach at Truman Anne, they were spotted at a rate of about three tar balls an hour for the rest of the day, with most found at high tide, the Coast Guard reported.

On Tuesday, more were found at Big Pine Key, Loggerhead Key in the Dry Tortugas National Park and on Smathers Beach.

If you see a tar ball, remember this stuff is hazardous material and can cause an allergic reaction, so don't touch it.

Instead, call the U.S. Coast Guard at 1-800-424-8802. Any oiled shorelines can be reported to 1-866-4485816.

As of Wednesday morning, all beaches on the Florida Keys remain open.

That would make matters worse PC

Push waves on shore and if east side of hurricane with its counter clock wise spin it would only drag it faster and with more force on shore. Maybe dilute it more but then again depends on were one goes.

A hurricane is all what we do not need right now.
you right striz ,it was a desperate thought ,this its looking ugly and the keys on top of everything will get hit first :?

Hopefully with the current and wind it keeps the oil drifting pass us. Maybe the worst case is tar balls on the shore.

So I have not been fishing or back in miami since may 1. this whole spill has been out of sight and out of mind, but I know deep down im scared that when i come back (late august) the keys will be lazy susan.

for those who are interested or are in any of cities of my tour check out this link:

Some good news today reported on the news. They reported that the oil won't be so concentrate and most will evaporate when it pass thru. Of course we will have to see the long term effects to our ecosystems.

I sure hope so. I decided on a spur-of-the-moment Keys trip for this weekend, figured I may as well go now just in case the worst case scenario does happen.
