4/24/10 report

Post by Jordan »

Went out to the usual shark spot with connnor and kevin yesterday. We thought it would be easy to yak because the surf was supposed to lay down but it really didn't so it was still a pain to yak a bait out. Kevin got hit within 5 minutes of dropping out a bonita and brought it a 5ft tip, no pics sorry guys. Connor soaked a huge AJ head all day on his 12/0 without a click.

The guys north of us were slaying the pomps I think they both got or got close to their limit, we tried for pomps with shrimp but only ended up getting like 5 whiting, we kept two of the bigger ones for shark bait.

People to the south of us showed up like 6 hours after we got there and got a 6ft 2inch bull on the first bait that they yakked out. So damn frusterating.

I'd love to get some rays for bait but we don't know like how to gig them and we haven't gotten one to eat any of the surf baits we throw out there.

We're fishing the south east coast.

just buy a gig tip and put it on broom stick. Wade flats around where you live they are stupid the let you walk right up onto them and when your close enough you just throw the gig into them. I tie a rope to the end of mine because i like to let them get tired before i try and pull it out.

Or you can check your briges at night they like to cruise along the bridges and just snag them with a snatch hook.

Where can we buy the gig tip?

I would love to wade around but I don't know of any flats around here; we live in coral springs which is in broward county.

a 4/0 wont hold enough line. Yaking out the bait, then when you hook up onto something good, there wont be enough line

exactly what do u mean by beach is terrible? too rocky, too many ppl, weird contour? :)
if u mean that the beach was terrible because it was wavy out then it would most likely be the same up and down the coast to.

imo i just dont think it holds the fish. maybe if a bait is soaked for a long time (like 24 hours lol) theres a chance, but a blacktip or spinner would find the meal way before a hammer or bull would.

the report u posted with the picture is from that beach. Theres really no rocks or to many people its a great beach but imo i dont think it can produce big sharks time after time. Someone caught an 11 foot tiger off the beach but im sure it was luck. We've been out SEVERAL times with no luck and just one hit and im not sure it was even something BIG.

Dude, you just gotta keep trying. That whole section of FL will give you the opportunity to hook the fish of a lifetime. Just because blacktips swarming your bait doesn't mean they aren't there. Keep at it and you'll find yourself strapped into a monster sooner or later.

If you want to up your chances, try to get your hands on some ray or fish at night if possible. However, bonita and AJ should produce just as well.

I'm with you on this one. You all are fishing in the middle of the day on weekends. I think middle of the night would do you all some good.

The big sharks are everywhere on the florida beaches espically here in Tampa. Try using bigger baits and see if that works but the big sharks are definetly here just keep cracking at it. Also i just use live shrimp on the bottom and a stingray finds them within 10 15 minutes.

I think the beach is fine, it has been hard to yak and we havnt gotten anything big, but we have had numerous people come up to us and say they have caught 9ft bulls, 11ft tigers, 10ft hammers right off that beach. We need to try to find some fresher bait. We usually get our bait early in the week and its frozen already. During the summer it will calm down and we will get some hookups.

ive heard stories like that to believing that someone caught giant sharks from the beach or pier until i ask the special question.... was it measured?.... did you landed? most responses are no it wasn't measured, and sometimes ive heard no... it wasn't landed(meaning it broke off right there in the surf). so you really don't know what to believe when you hear a big shark was caught.

Yeh, im hopeing soon. Its tough to get picked up at 12 when your only 15. Once jordanconnorsharp gets his license we should be staying later and getting more biggens.

I know that feeling it sucks have to get dropped off and picked up.....you can get gig tips at walmart or most tackle shops...a broomstick or metal painters pole something like that works perfect....if you go wading for them you only need about a 6-7ft pole and just walk real slow make no noise and you can get right on top of them...i dont think the rays can see anything they only feel vibrations and movement...make sure you get a decent sized gig tip just in case you come across some bigger rays the smaller tips will brake on you...those big sharks are never in one area they a migratory fish they move up and down the coast mostly following the bait schools and tarpon schools....if you hear about a school of tarpon a few miles north or south of you pack up your gear and move to those fish and thats where you''ll get alot more bites from teh bigguns...
zac myself and a few others been on moving from beach 2 beach for about 2 weeks now and its like a desert up here no bait no fish no sharks, just that one tiger....as soon as the bait and tarpon get here its on...
