Headed out for a tautog trip on Sunday. Cleared the inlet at sunrise and made a quick stop in shallow water to see if any fish were around. Exiting the cabin, I immediately regretted making the trip. The deck was covered in sea ice (as was the entire boat). Checked my phone and the temp was 12 degrees. Stayed on the spot for a short time with no bites and headed out deeper. The wind picked up and we had a high of 25 degrees with a 20-25 knot NW wind. The crabs we were using for bait were freezing on the bait table. However, we began to catch some fish and I ended the day with several nice tautog to 9lbs. I tried out my brand new Fin Nor Marquesa, which performed flawlessly all day.
However, I will seriously reconsider making a trip on a small boat (35 feet) in weather that cold ever again.
