The list is getting shorter.

First pomp on the fly today. It hit a #4 tan/white SF clouser while cruising the Banana river flats. These little bastards have been pissing me off for the last 3 years. A little payback felt good.

In shallow water the pomp is a totally different critter. They're very spooky and they have a cruising speed of about 10 knots. That's why it took me 3 years to get one to eat a fly. It might only be a 4.5lb fish ( I weighed it), but I'm as proud of that little SOB as any snook/tarpon I've taken on the fly. There are tons of pomps out there by the way, and most river pomps are kinda huge. I caught a 6.5lb pomp on a bubblegum pink strike king zulu last year.

What's wrong with my hat?

Congradulations that is a nice pompano esp on the fly.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Local,

I know how you feel about the Pomps, I finally cracked the code on the west coast where I got the occasional pomp on fly mixed in with the Trout. I use a lead eyed Clouser (Tan/White) with a collar of orance crystal flash. Fished on an intermediate line with moderate strips in 3 ft over mixed sand/grass bottom. It took forever to get it figured out, but now it works.

In the area I typically fish the water is between 10" and 24". I would probably have much better luck with the pomps if I waded out to the edge of the sandbar, but I have a hangup about sighting fish. Shallow water pomps have a steady cruising speed of about 6 knots, usually by the time you make that final false cast that little SOB has already covered 40' of water. This fish was stupid enough to stop and give me a shot.

Sight fishing to Pomps would be very cool indeed! My hat is off to you, on the west coast they never seem to run that shallow, but probably I am just not seeing them as the drop off is too close to the beach and we tend to wade out to thigh depth and work with intermediate lines. Any advice on the East coast as far as accessible flats for the boatless? I am working in the Daytona area this week.

I love the stupid ones and also fish too. :D
