They use the longer rods for a few reasons . 1 The longer rod allows you to keep the line off of the bridge if the fish runs under it through a tunnel. 2 With a longer rod you can fish some of the traffic bridges when the current is running under them. 3 Casting is a lot easier with longer rods. 4 . When a shark makes a long run and is fighting away from the bridges for me a longer rod makes it easier to locate the fish and help you to manuever and angle your line to avoid pilings or power poles on the bridges esp at night. Disadvantage of longer rods is overall leverage , longer rods are tougher on your back vs a short rod. For beach fishing a short rod will work if you have a taller sand spike to keep the line out of the breakers and weed in the surf.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.
Seems very reasonanable to have such a big rod for those exact reasons you listed. will the 30-80lb class be able to handle big sharks when using 130 lb line?
basically, yes. You want your leader to be at least the length of the largest shark you think you'll ever hook into so you dont get tail-whipped. all my leaders are about 10 feet of 600 lb mono and 6 feet of 1000 lb cable. However much of that you want to be mono or wire/cable is your choice...however, i would advise against using 10 ft of wire The less wire/cable to better.

I'm the same way. Keep it up and you will do fine. Give it time for the knowledge to absorb. Knowing too much can sometimes be too much. Best advice is just go fish. Doesn't matter what gear you have. Experience is what matters.

The prostitute replied (wiping away tears), "When the check bounced."
