Frozen Crabs?

I was wondering if small frzen stone crabs would be good for bait for permit off the beach?Has anyone had any experience with freezing crabs?

dont stone crabs have a size limit on them? im not sure but check first cuz you dont want a fine over a small crab.

Pretty sure it is illegal to even possess a whole stone crab, you can only harvest the claws.

It is illegal to have a whole one in your possesion.

Oh no i dont have any in my i was just fishing and under the rocks there was a ton of them so i was wondering to load up on them and freeze them and use them later but if thats the case ill try something else thanks for the info :thumleft:

Are you sure they are actual stone crabs ?

Im not sure but they look like them i looked at the pics of them on google the claws look exactly the same but the body is darker and i asked the park ranger and he said they were but you no park rangers :nilly:

There are a few different crabs you're probably seeing, i've shown a couple pictures below.

Blue Crab: Idk about laws on these. VVV

Stone Crab: Can only posses the claws and there is a bag limit and a season for these.VVV

Fidler Crab: Smaller, and not sure if there are any laws like the 2 above. VVV

I've had just as many permit eat frozen crabs as live.
The only problem is they fall aprt much easier after being frozen so have alot.

Try glazing the crabs. Before you freeze them dip them in ice water then lay out them flat in the freezer til they are solid. The bath will prevent them from getting as freezer burned.

They're crabs, not doughnuts :mrgreen:

I have had luck with frozen ones too, but like said they are more brittle. I ususally freeze my extra fresh ones, and bring them with me as backup baits on my next trip, if I don't use them after they were thawed once I crush them up for chum.

i dont really use them that much since she wont let me get that close after the last incident, swatted her girly area with a flea rake and ended up in the hospital.

his sisters stay in the hook better imo :mrgreen:
