keeping bait fresh

Im going down to the keys saturday and i would like to go to dania pier friday and catch bait there and take it with me. i know i cant keep the bait alive long enough, but whats the best way to keep it fresh? I dont want to freeze it

I do the same thing all the time, if you will be using the bait the next day, just keep it well iced inside gallon ziplock bags. Make sure no water gets in the bags, if the bait gets wet it'll get mushy. I double bag them to be safe, and make sure they are always well buried in ice. Good luck, cut the tails off of the pilchards and hook them from the bottom of the head out the top, that is great snapper bait for down there.
