Fishing the Upper Keys- Fly Fishing and Spinner Rod

Post by Guido »

Hey Boatless Fishers,

My name is Guido. What a great website this is for those of us from other places getting started fishing here on the Keys.

I am visiting my son and grandsons who live on Key Biscayne. Got my oldest (7 years old) psyched on fishing in San Diego where he caught his first surf perch using sand crabs he dug. I'd like to have him hook a fish during my visit here on the Keys. :reeling: He will be using a conventional spinning reel. What lures, bait, rigging and locations work best for shore fishing here for a focused little guy?

I usually fish for halibut, corbina, shovel nose shark and perch using a fly rod in the surf along the beaches and river mouths of San Diego where I live. After a recent river drifting trip with a guide, I've gotten into using hybrid fly fishing using plastics etc on my fly rod after catching 4 steelhead that way on California's American River. Here are my questions?

What fish are actively being caught this time of year Feb 26-Mar4?
Time of day, tide, ebb/flow?
What patterns, plastics, stripping technique are working?
What are the best fishing locations for fly fishing in the upper Keys. I am staying in Key Biscayne.
We are river canoers, kayakers and rafters. What suggestions do you have for fishing from one of these crafts in the mangroves like Pennecamp?
What fly patterns and/or hybrid riggings are working?
Where is a good place to buy saltwater flies and/or lures near here?
Where can I buy a Florida fishing license on/near Key Biscayne? (attempted using floridafishinglicenses.org before my flight but it turned out to be less than useful for me)

Hey, thanks for any feedback that floats my way. Have a great day fishing yourself.

Guido
