Helen S wends 8/21/13 good boat horrible customers.

Yesterday a buddy of mine and I decided to head out on the Helen S again in hopes of tuna time again. I arrived around 730 while my buddy was waiting at the boat. anothe patron arrived before us and was first in line. As im walking up he notices our jig setups and starts complaining to himself about people who verticle jig and braid. I brushed it off not wanting any problems. just wanted to fish.

We get on the boat and the gent is still complaining about it and making low comments about throwing our gear in if we cross his line. We get to our first stop and start fishing. the disgruntled guy hooks a decent mutton and continues to yell at my friend and myself about crossing lines and how he is going to throw our rods and reels in.


Now im not one to get into it with someone on a boat im here to have fun and fish. The guy pissed me off I gave in....


I start saying you dont own the boat nor are you the captain of the boat. it does not say anywhere on the boat no braid or no jigging. He explains hes been paying the boats bills for 5 years and he goes twice a week. I respond with cool story bro, Aditionally that with regulars like you I sure wont be comming back. so thats one less person with alot of internet power. he than says u got here late and your bag in on the first bench. no sir my bag is in the cabin with my gear. I than explain to the angry man if he did throw my buddys stella and my avet over board it would suck spending the night in the booty house due to you throwing my rods over. his rebuttle was well Ill just pay for them.... at this point I say well sir ill be sure to tangle you than so you can buy me my new accurate lol. at this point the capt comes down and says because he got to the boat first he decied who can and cant jig. My rebutle was simply no one had a issue when I caught the big tuna. it was all high 5s and handshakes now its an issue. the angry man happens to be the manager at the bass pro shops restauraunt from what im told. very unsportsman like the way he handled the situation. a simple would you guys mind moving over would have sufficed



its a shame the i met the owner skip when I got there and introduced my self as the big tuna guy. he smiled shook hands and said have a good trip. its a shame the owner is a really nice guy its unfotunate that a angry passenger has to ruin it for another angler.


I wont be returning again on the Helen S for the reasons of the "regulars and the way it was handled by the captain.



I ended the trip with 1 yellow tail. slow day and high seas

What a tool. Why talk so much crap before the boat even left the dock? Sounds like the guy has bigger issues than just people jigging.

thats what the capt said. my issue was the way the other guy went about it. there is no need to curse and threaten.

the funny thing is they had no issue with it last time. nor did they have a issue before this guy started complaining. all in all they lost me as a customer and poss who ever reads this

When I hear stories like this I avoid those boats.. so yes.. your story already had an effect

"Regulars" feel entitled, and the crew usually has their back because they line their pockets with tips on a weekly basis (understandable), but that guy sounds like he was just being a douche. You need to have thick skin on these boats sometimes. Sorry to hear one guy is turning you away from the whole operation.

If I were you I'd go again and make sure to jig the whole trip standing directly next to that guy

last time I jigged on the opp side. this time we were jiggin from the back. away from everyone and he still had a problem. they were trying the assighned seating. that works for bottom fishing and what not but im moving all over jigging. I try to stay away from bottom guys and flat linners just for reasons like this.

besides this wasnt my first rodeo I can control a fish if need be

Guy was having a bad day or just an ahole or both. Now what you said above what is the problem if the capt. came down & said no jigging from your statement above that shouldnt be a problem?

the capt only came down because the regular was getting owned. I felt like the capt was going to side with the guy no matter what he wanted.

Did you try speaking to the Capt. anytime after that? Probably wouldnt have made a differences but you might have gotten something in the end if you spoke with the Capt just a few mins after that or after the trip was over. Let's all be honest here, if that guy is going twice a week & they only see you a hand full of times a year, I would have sided with him as well. The regs are their beard & butter plus beer on these trips. This situation could have been handle a bit different, yes, but at the heat of the moment you know things sometimes are said & they are going to side with the regs on the boat as you know.

I wouldnt stop going on this boat. It seems like you like this boat & it was just one bad apple. Go over & speak with the Capt. that you would like a spot to jig & have his word. Build that relationship & trust & go from there. If not, you know there is plenty of other boats out there or till you get your boat.

Oh i def agree thats why the sided with him. my main issue was the way it was handled. not once was the other guy told to calm down it took other people to tell him to calm down and let it go.



if I wanna jig in broward ill make the trip a few miles south to sealeggs for now on. even when I didnt do well on that boat chris and capt were a good time.

You used to fish on the Lady K, didn't you? Maybe it's time to give them another chance. They have a new captain, Frank Call, in addition to Bruce, who is supposed to be pretty good.

I'm not a braid fan nor a verticle jigging fan but they do allow them on the Lady K (I know that Bruce allows it, I haven't gone out with Frank yet) and the regulars get along pretty well with each other.

I still go on lady K, my buddy is 5 min from helen s so he invited me along. Bruce is the man I love fishing with him. hes prob the one capt I have no problem when he picks up my spare rod and uses it to spool bottom. I still go on lady K that will always be my home boat so to speak
