Outta Control III

Post by sepaik »

Hey Guys,
I'm going to Charter Ralph's Boat the 54' Hatteras going to the Islamarada Humps July 29,30,31st. Leaving Friday Morning from Hollywood at the Sea Legs Marina fishing all the way down to Islamarada. Dock at Holiday Isle Friday Night then fish the HUMPS all day Saturday and return Sunday by noon.

Cost is $2,100 for the boat which includes bait, tackle and meals. I have three guys for sure but looking for one or two more to cut down on expenses.

Any one interested?

Ricky,

I was hoping you would reply to this post! I'm glad your interested. Should be a great trip especially this time of year ( Mahi-Mahi ,Black Fin and if that isn't happening there's plenty of reefs to go Mutton hunting). I need to know ASAP. Of course there is a six man limit but we were hoping to limit it to Five. I have 3 for sure and a solid maybe(EnglishAdam) is four. I have lot's of maybe's so far so it's first come first serve.

The only real way to know if people are serious is if they put a deposit down.

You can call me and I'll save you a spot.

sepaik -- Great post. That will be a great trip for sure. Captain Ralphie is for sure a fisherman's captain. If my son wasn't on the way I would love to go. I can't wait to see the report.

I think we have it all in place. Now it's getting ready time! I'm siked! I just bought a jigging reel and rod , ordered some butterflies from Ebay and hopefully will get some jigging done. I'm new to jigging but I'm sure I'll learn a thing or two. Unlike Tortugas trips which are always my favorate. No worrying about bait and all the tackle. Jigging rod is all I'm bringing. Ralph will have everything else. We'll be catching bait on the way down. Report will follow for sure! If only I could stop obscessing over this trip and get some sleep I'd be in good shape! :cyclopsani: :cyclopsani:

Well trip day came upon us. The weather really wasn't what I hoped it would be. A tropical storm out in the Gulf really sturred things up and made for some heavy winds 15-20 mph with 3-5 foot seas. But we were determined to make the best of it.

My brother in law and his friend Toy came down from Ohio for this trip. I picked up from the Hard Rock Cafe where they stayed over night before our trip. We made our final beer and ice run and we were off.

We got to Holiday Isles met with the Outta Control and the crew. Then we were off to Robbies. Ricky had to work late so it was just the three of us. Rich and Troy had never flatlined for Mangroves or Yellow tails. I was giving them pointers and the theory all the way down. They were quick studies and caught about 20 Managroves between us all.

We went back to the Outta control Ricky was at the boat and getting all his gear ready. I was siked for the morning. :pistols:

We started the morning, left the dock around 8am. Headed for the humps. We trolled 6-8 lines on the way to the HUMPS. SkipJack tunas and Blackfins were hitting the lines. We were picking away at them. Trolling really isn't my favorate way to fish. It's like the mates do all the fishing and you get to reel it in. But it's stlill fun when the fish are on.

We got to the Humps. Seas about 2-4 and We started vertical jigging. A nice Banded Rudder fish came over along with some Skipjacks and a Blackfin. I'm new to Jigging so it got tiring quick. Lot's of birds were circling in little swarms. We caught about 10 or so Blackfins and 10 or so Skippys. The seas started getting rougher so we headed in a little eary.

That night we were treated with fresh Tuna Tenaki and fish taco's. The tuna just melted in my mouth. It was really good! I passed out early falling asleep around 9 on one of the benches on the dock and finding my way to my bunk around 11. The boys decided to hit Woody's and boozed up with the Mates. Jeff ( one of the Mates) is getting married in two weeks, so perfect reason to buy drinks and dances. Not excactly what I was there for.

The next mornig was a repeat of the previous day. The sea were a little calmer 2-3. Trolled to the Humps. We followed the birds and schools of dophin were under them. Now that was exciting. Especially when all four of us had a pole in our hands with fish on! Best part was when we hit a huge weed patch and dolphin after dolphin cane in. We threw live Pelchards and greenies at them. They were a little on the finicky side but we managed to pull in 4-5 on that spot.

No luck on the verticle jigs on this day. For some reason very little Tuna action either. All dophin on Saturday and all Tuna on Friday.

Nice, what kind of setup were you using for the vertical jigs? It is tiring but after a few trips it becomes much easier.

Well, you guys did awesome :toast: Jigging gets tired when using big reels and rods...That's why I say go small on that gear, the lightest you can the more it will be enjoyed. But you get used to the big gear later on. Great pics! :toast:

I used a Diawa Saltist LD-20. It has 7.3/1 ratio and a Star Jigging Rod. Both are super light but I was still tired after 3-4 retrieves. I had 65lb braid and about 15 ft of mono at the end. I went to ebay just before the trip and loaded up on jigss. They liked the red and white jigs on this trip. I ran out of the red and white and swiched to pink. I had no bites on pink.
