Got him on a Torsa 30 with 40lb mono. Light tackle for him he beat me up pretty good.

Nice fish. She rocked you up on something . Looks bigger than 50 to me though. With big blacks it seems you land more by fighting them a little backed off. The harder you pull the harder they pull.

THe standord LRSA Drag. I fishied a double that day and told my roomate the nite before that i would go gog fishing with him for key west coming up. He beat me bad i wanted to hand the rod off thinking he was a aj. The scare on his head was he tried to rock me but i guess couldnt find anything big enough. Caught him at 730 put him on ice bout midnight bc we had no cooloer bc we were bait fishing. We weighed him the next morning at bout 10.30 and he was 55 im sure he lost maybe 3 lbs. My roomate and His captian won the the captian of the year for the in the bite magazine so next month they are going to do a article on the fish. This is the 3rd black over 30 since feburary we got on this same reck.

Even more impressive from a wreck. My last big one I could feel her digging bottom and rubbing her nose but like you said she couldn't find anything big enough to hide under. A black grouper over 40 lbs is pure power and faster than most think.

We sold it. The people i was with have caught a few that big. You can eat it but the meat is real tough and good chance of posining.

There is definately a few beasts out there like that. I had a live goggle eye on bottom on my TRQ300, and a 6oz weight, got it about halfway up when it decided it didn't like being dragged to the surface, and bolted down and popped my line...now mind you it popped 80lbs braid...NOT the 6ft 100lbs mono leader...figure that out. I also dropped a keeper snapper off a wreck in 400ft of water, and got 130lbs braid broke off. There are some BIGGUNS out there...just gotta know where to go!

Flippen if you have a grouper break you on 80 or 130 braid it is most likely not a black prob a 500 pound jewfish. Jewfish are a different animal in deep water. Talk to guys like Fishin Fool who have caught big blacks. There is a way to fight them it is a science. If you try to over power them like you see on tv with 50 wides you are going to get beat. I will give you a hint if you are having big groupers beat you look at the science of it ( the way that you are fighting or pumping the fish) just remember a fish does not come in untill you put line on the reel.
