I am OGLIN!!!

Post by swordfish »

I am looking at the kayaks, and I am getting excited, because they would open a WHOLE new world of fishing for me down here. I can hit flamingo and fool a redfish or two into taking one of my redfish seducers. I have a 7/0 fly rod and would be perfect in my view...

I know for a fact I can also hit those mangroves for a cruising snook... OH MAN, now I am getting excited!!! This is all without even thinking about all the flats that would now be open to my fishing... I think I will be catching so many bonefish it might get old... (YEAH RIGHT)

I guess, drift over the flats? Happen upon some fish? I wanna learn all I can about this "yak" fishing! So if anyone is kind enough to fill me in and I WOULD NEED A YAK FISHING BUDDY! Have no desire in perishing by me onesy in the jaws of a bull, or a gater!!! LOL, ok gaters Ill rassle, but crocs I respect too much, even the little ones, its their attitude.

yak fishin

Post by Fuzzy(as in not clear) »

Howdy swordfish,
I try to fish Flamingo a couple times a month. There's a group of regulars called the Derelicts that yak fish there, alot :!:

I always seem to catch fish there, even if it's a Flamingo slam, slimey cat, ladyfish and jacks. In the last 30 days, I caught snook, permit, trout and even hooked a few tarpon. Saw the tailing reds, just couldn't get'em to bite. Also, recently, there seems to be a good number of small sharks, though I haven't tried to catch'em

Not to take anything away from this group or the local dealers, check out http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/default.asp
especially the Florida forum section. There's always some one wanting to kayak fish somewhere. Hopefully, tomorrow, I'll get some new pic's to post

The yak

Post by Fuzzy(as in not clear) »

Hey JB, Thanks
Kayak fishin has been what I've been looking for for 40 years! Wish I'd have found out about kayaks a long time ago. It'd saved me big bucks after boats, from sportfishers to flats boats to jonboats.

This is my first, it's a Hobie Adventure with the Mirage Drive system. http://www.hobiecat.com/kayaking/index.html almost hands free fishing, I bought it after about 6 months of searching yak fishing on the net. Got it from http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/about_kfs.asp out of New Jersey. I live in Margate and had it delivered to my door fishing ready. All I've added was the milk crate with a couple of extra rod holders, a Paranha fishfinder, a sail, and a small GPS.

I guess it's set me back 2 grand including the rack to carry it on my Jeep. I fish way more than when I had my boats, no worries about fuel costs.

There are a great many good fishing yaks that can be had with decent rigging for less, I just liked the idea of hands free movement. I have trolled the beaches of Ft. Laud. and Dania, fished flats in the Keys and Flamingo. Even done a little fishing in Chokoloskee. One day soon, I'm going to get up to Indian River and the 'goon for some of those big reds.

Nice

I am looking in the sources and I believe I have found something to fit my needs. I have a fly rod and a light spinning rod, I dont believe I would need anything else. I really want to get into this, I mean like I said the possibilities are endless, you can do anything and everything, perhaps even put in a trolling motor or a sail, paddle into the wind then come back when you are tired with the sail. Best of all, NO NEED FOR GAS!!!! So well see how things develop.

Good luck, and do research

Since Hank Parker's show with the kayak fishing, kayaks are a hot item. There has been ESPN coverage of several Kayak only tourniments, also. Recently, I have seen some good deals on used yaks, some barely used. Folks tend to rush out and buy, get tired, and then sell or worse yet let the yak just sit around.

I believe any "fishing" kayak should have a rudder at the very least. The rudder will at least help you keep the direction you want on a drift with out using the paddle. As seen in this and the other pics posted, I also carry a set of wheels to get the yak from the jeep to the water. Most lower priced yaks are kinda heavy and it's easy to rig at the car then wheel to the water.
If you plan on fishing with a bunch of rods and tackle, a milk crate is nice. I can, but don't usually carry 6 rods fairly safely between the rod holders that came with the yak, plus two more in the crate I modified and the two RAM rod holders I installed,6 or 8 "beverages", and plenty of tackle. I haven't caught any real big fish so the Wally World freezer bag will keep most fish at least cool for a couple of hours.

As seen in the pic below, I use a V type sail. It can be purchased ready made for under $300 but, I have seen plans on a forum some where that tell of making the same type for around $60. Depending on the type of rudder you have, this sail will sail slightly up wind. I use the sail for trolling sometimes, and eating and drinking most of the time while going to other spots to fish.

One last thing, plan on leashing every thing you don't want to lose if you're any where where theres a chance to get out of the yac by some choice other than your own, don't ask

As soon as I get my yak and test it out on a shallow beach etc... would you mind on taking a little fishing trip with me down to Flamingo? I wanna learn a bit and would love it if you could share some of your wisdom. I am extremely interested in placing a fly under some od those mangroves for some cruising snook. ALSO, would it be wise to invest in a full MOSQUITO suit? I can get one for about 29.95 at Don's, but I wouldnt want to wear something that will drag me down in the event of a un-planned, involuntary swim... ( I am a big guy, so I AM THINKING that getting back on will be HARD!) The yak I am looking at is

http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores ... g_21985347

It is from a gentleman in Naples, so I can go pick it up and he will be sending me his best price, including paddle, seat, rod holders and livewell system.

Not a problem

Post by Fuzzy(as in not clear) »

Swordfish,
Flamingo is one of my favorite places. Since I just started a new job, I can only get down there on week-ends. Lots of flats, mostly all shallow with the channels being very narrow. As for the bugs, some folks wear head nets when launching, never seen anyone with the "full suit" The skeeters only seem bad when on shore or very close to the mangroves. A good deet product works for some, I use a new repellant with lemon and eucalyptus from REPEL

Last time down, there was a fellow fly fishing from the same kind of yak. I think, and he was standing to cast!
