As most of you know Jimbo's on Virginia key is finally closing down. It has been open since the early fifties and was the last place you could to in the city of Miami, where you truly felt away from it all. It has hosted everything from: concerts, Richard Nixon, models, numerous miami episodes, and parties. I first when there in like '99 to buy shrimp and was not impressed, but the place soon charmed me. I wasn't a regular, but I did go back on different times. I've walked the trails, talked to the crazy people, drank a few beers, played a gig there, and played bocce ball. i never did catch anything there, but i also never really tried!
anyways, if you guys have stories about jimbo's from recent or back in the day post 'em here!

Jimbo's is now owned by the city of Miami. Watch what the "community redevelopment' board will do to this place.....

I'm predicting that they eventually will build overpriced condos on this site, by a construction company (probably in Latin builders association) that has a connection to a city of miami commissioner.....thats my guess....is that too cynical? Its sad too, Jimbo's had its share of warts, but it was a truly unique experience.

Re: Jimbo's on Virginia Key!
Well, they closed down that beach and area to fishing and swimmers because they converted it into a sanctuary. But I guess sanctuary is just another word for making people leave so later on they can build something on it. That is the same thing they did at the Bearcut marina. They closed down the little beach at the end made the place a bird and lobster sanctuary and then last year they had bulldozers cutting down the trees and who know what they will do next.
Miami is slowly converting on a place you can only fish from a boat. by the way I heard that the Rickenbacker may have some fractures on the structure so they might tear it down with in the next five years. It's just rumors, but that's how they tore down the South side and the bearcut catwalks (which are supposed to be rebuilt).

Anyways I don't know if you know but the feces Processing Plant is on that same side where Jimbos is. You just can't see it because of the trees. Who would in their right mind would want to build there

yeah I know the waste plant is there but you never know when it comes to the city of Miami's gov't. ...The fishing around jimbo's has always sucked (for me), but on the west side of Virginia Key near the plant/radar dish, the flats are really good fishing for canoes/kayaks. There is a no-motor zone with a deep channel that goes up into the mangroves. I would always launch at Jimbo's and paddle around the north tip to to get there, but you could park at rusty pelican and go due north too.

Re: Jimbo's on Virginia Key!
I first went to Jimbo's in 1996 by boat. My friend drove us there after a day of unproductive fishing.
I think I drank a beer and ate some smoked fish.
We tried to play bocce on the lumpy court, but there was a mangy dog sleeping there and he wasn't looking too friendly.
They showd me pictures of some modeling shoots that wer done there. It was quiet. I liked that.
I'm glad I got to see it then.
I went back a year ago and was dissappointed that the place was overrun with squatters. It was kinda sad.
On one hand you have this little snip of paradise tucked away from crazy miami, on the other hand you watch paradise devolve.
It will probably get developed, but the smell from the poop factory won't neccessarily attract eager buyers.

Re: Jimbo's on Virginia Key!
I loved Jimbos. Always made it a point to go there and hangout and play some bocci ball (sp) when I could. This is a tough loss.

"There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot."
