Noobie needs some lure & location advice

Post by Andy63 »

Hi everybody,

Here is my situation. I know next to nothing about fishing. But I want to lean. Thanks to a cousin from up North, I purchased a St. Croix Triumph Spinning 4 Piece Travel Fishing Rod (6'6", Medium Fast) TRS66MF4, a Shimano Sedona 2500FD Spinning Reel and 150 yards of green McCoy Fishing Super Spectra Braid 30 Pounds fishing line. I do also have a few old lures I used once with a friend a couple of years ago. I live on the Turnbull Bay Creek (brackish water) and I would like to fish off my backyard (where most fish I see seem to be mullets). I also would like to learn how to fish from the following locations:

1) in shores of the Indian River
2) from the boardwalk and shore of lake Ashby,
3) the various ponds in our forests
4) the shores the Saint Johns river (near Blue Springs).

I do have a kayak, but I would rather not use it and fish off the shore. Also, I don't want to use any bait, only artificial lures.

My questions to you is this:

1) For each of the environments mentioned above, what type of fish should a total beginner try to catch?
2) For each of the environments mentioned above, what type of lure and action would you recommend I try first.

It would be most helpful if for my second question you could give me a link to a lure sold on Amazon - this way I could easily get the right one.

I have read that fishermen have different preferences for lures, but surely there must be some kind of "consensus lure" for fishing in the four location I have indicated above. For example, one friend told me that the best for the Indian River would be a gold spoon. Well, the only fish I ever caught was a sea trout caught at the Mosquito Lagoon canal and it was with a gold spoon. Dunno if that is a coincidence or not.

Anyway, if you could recommend 4 lures for the 4 locations given above I would be most grateful.

Many thanks in advance for any pointers!
