Key Largo Bridge Fishing?

Post by Perchguy »

First off, I would like to say I am new member here and hoping to get some information. I am going to be staying Marathon with my wife and 3 kids (ages 12 - 17) for a week in Mid June and will be renting a boat for the week. I have been there before with a boat and have that fishing figured out well enough to do all right. I will be adding a 3 day stay in Key Largo at the end of our trip. I will still have my fishing gear with me but won't have access to a boat. Can anyone give me some pointers regarding bridge fishing in the area? I have never tried bridge fishing but since I will be there for 3 days without a boat, it seems like this will be the time to try! The gear I will have with be will be 6 foot medium action spinning rods spooled with 15lb mono and 7 foot heavy action casting rods with 80lb braid (my Musky fishing gear in Wisconsin). Any help would greatly appreciated!

Sounds like the Channel 5 Bridge will be the place to go. I have never tried bridge fishing before. What do weight line do you recommend? What weight sinkers do you think I will need? Anyone know how far above the water the Channel 5 bridge is????

I have heard good things about the Gulfstream, but I think after a week of feeding gas to my rental boat, and feeding chum to the fish, my budget is going to regulate me to Bridge fishing for the last leg of the trip!

Yes channel 5 is a goood option u also have channel 2 and long key . I would recommend fishing light like 12lb test and just buy a couple dozen live shrimp . Fish the pillings till u find the fish . Good luck and have fun!

Welcome! We'd love some Wisconsin reports by the way!

June is a great time from the boat and i am certain the bridges will keep you occupied as well! Enjoy!

if at all possible you may wanna cut down one day of the rental and go on the gulfstream your first day there....you will learn technique and some tips for your boating excursions if you pick guys brains respectfully (bait, current, structure to look for etx etx). and you will also catch fish lol

As much as I would like to take a run on the Gulfstream, I will be relegated to Bridge fishing for the final 3 days of my trip. Hopefully I will have a cooler full of Mahi from the week where I have the boat rental. The Keys are sounding really good to me today. Woke up to a temp of -23 F up here in northern Wisconsin this morning. Won't stop me from fishing this weekend though. We have about 18" of ice on the lake I live on and kerosene heater to keep my ice shanty plenty warm. Bluegills and crappies have been biting well. Even managed a 30" Northern Pike last Saturday.
