How To: Take Apart/Service/Rebuild a Penn Senator (117h)

Post by Jordan »

Figured since it was such a pain in the a&^ for me to take apart my 14/0, I'd do a how-to, to help people out who are doing this for the first time.

A lot of this info does not come from directly from me, a lot came from Alan Tani's tutorials, from Santosh (Frogfish101), CubanExpress (helped me with figuring out how to stack the drag washers). I'm just summing it all up so you don't have to go searching for all of the info.

Things You'll Need
1. A few old towels/rags
2. A screwdriver
3. A wrench
4. New parts to fix broken ones (plan on buying more, you'll find out why)
5. Drag grease (Cals, or Penn)
6. Corrosion X
7. A lot of f!@#$ng patience

Here is a list of parts for the 14/0, as well as a schematic.
http://store.scottsbt.com/117L-Schemati ... 9C192.aspx

First, start by taking off the handle. Use a small screwdriver to get that small screw out, and then unwind that nut/bolt with a wrench. Continue to take the pieces out, and lay them out in the order you took them out.

As you get to the drag washers, remove them and put them aside. If you bought new washers such as ht-100s, you can discard the old NON METAL washers. Keep all metal washers.

Now that you have the pieces of the handle and drag out and aside, you can take off the sideplate. To do so, remove all of the screws with a screwdriver. Keep in mind that some of the screws will break if they are old. The longer screws go in with the bars.

Once you have the sideplate off, take a mental picture of how everything is supposed to look. When you move things to clean them, put them back just as they were. Clean all the old grease off with an old towel. Use new grease to grease the other parts (especially moving parts).

While you have the sideplate off, you will notice three springs. One of these springs called the dog spring is the longer, skinnier spring. Watch out for this mofo. It will shoot out of the sideplate and you will have a not so fun time trying to find it.

Now once you have cleaned the inside and greased it up, you can put the side plate back on.

Time for the other side plate. Take the screws out just like you did with the handle side. Only thing you need to clean off here is the clicker.

Once you have the side plate back on, you can clean the outside of the reel. Spray corrosion X on a towel and wipe down the entire reel. This should get rid of any signs of rust, as well as help protect your reel from future corrosion.

The Drag Washers
If the reel is older most likely it has the 5 drag washer system. These have 5 non metal washers. If you buy new ht-100 washers you will need 7 of them, as they are smaller then the older washers. The order they go in is as follows:
fiber/metal/fiber/metal/fiber/metal/fiber/metal/fiber/metal/fiber/metal/fiber/metal (thanks again CE).

You can and should grease up the washers with Cals or Penn drag grease. Grease them up and wipe off the excess grease.

It took me and Kevin literally all day to take apart my 14/0 and do all of this. It can be frusterating at first but it's worth not having to pay someone else to service it.

Thanks again to Santosh, Alan Tani, CubanExpress, and all of the other tutorials.

Good luck and I hope that this helps.
