Thanks for the kind words on the gaff's....and mostly just reel the med size spanish up, they are plentiful when the school is there....flounder never, pompano never....they are fish that need to be in the cooler and are scarce compared to others....I have lost a few when first started, but not now....not a big deal if I loose a couple spanish, but my last trip I only lost one that should have been netted, it was a good one....oh well ....I did get in (with net) the winner pier tournament spanish, and had and lost on the way up the (would have been) king for the tourney....soanish was 5-14lb and the king was over 30....a bad gaff shot by a regular 5 feet out of the water the gaff tore out of it's spine and gone....oh well.... It would have been nice as a googan touron to get both first place finishes ....the locals were gunning for the spanish, they didn't want me to win it....the gaffer..... I gave a gaff too so he could practice with it ....I was giving it away anyway for the biggest fish caught over a weekend(but none was) he was shocked when I gave it to him after loosing the winning fish for me....but hey it's fishing and those things happen, just wish it didn't happen to that fish that was worth some moneyjettypark28 wrote:With small/med fish that don't flap around that much... reeling up like that works..
but I have seen people snap rods trying to do itand I would never ever try that
method on a doormat flounder... ever!!!
I saw this guy try to it with one of the largest flounders I have ever seen at JP ... and
I told him to wait and I would get my net... but noooooo... he done plenty of times
and knew better![]()
not even half way the flounder did its dehooking flip and went back to the sea![]()
god that made my day... and as for the guy... well he was so upset he pack up and left

Oh by the way those are great looking gaffs...
I guess in order to need a gaff you have to catch fish worthy of it....there are a few for sale
and pictures really don't do them justice
