Rod and Reel Loss Prevention
After all the the thefts that have been happening lately, I though a topic on theft prevention was in order. Please feel free to add to it.
Topics could include..
Marking your gear (methods, products, etc.)
Locking your gear
Photo documentation (in case of theft)
What to do in case of theft (notify police, check pawn shops, etc)
ect..

A Dremel Tool is a great investment !
A Well placed carving may dissuade someone from stealing to use or resell. Not alwats pretty but definately a deterrent.
Microchip implants are getting more and more affordable everyday and do not laugh, they are easily tracked afer insertion in the Rod Butt, Assuming your combo is not seperated.
Similar to what is used inm Pet Tracking.....
a small investment to a $1000 Custom Rod Reel setup is worth it IMHO.

Magnetic window alarm.
Little window alarms are available at Radio Shack, Lowes and Home Depot for about $10 for a package of 3 or 4, including batteries. They are surprisingly loud.
Tie a piece of 8# test mono to the magnet and another to the alarm itself. Using the peel and stick tape on the alarm, stick it to your cart or other convenient place. Wrap the mono around the rods you want to protect and stick the magnet on the alarm then activate the unit by turning on the switch. If anybody messes with your rods, it alarms.
These suckers are cheap and loud enough to get your attention.
A driveway alarm can easily protect stuff in your truck while you are in a restaurant. Mount the driveway sensor in your truck where it won't be set off by everybody who walks by and put the alarm unit in your pocket. If somebody messes with your gear, the alarm in your pocket goes off and you can walk outside, haul out your sidearm and blow him away.(Just kidding about blwoing him away) Call 911 as you head outside. Take Bubba with you just in case you need back up.
A well camouflaged Sabiki Rig wrapped around your tackle could cause a crook some woe too, especially if it was secured to your truck.

I try to leave all my stuff in one place at the pier, usually a little farther up from where I am fishing or on the T, so that I would hopefully see somebody with my stuff before they made it off the pier.
Never leave rods in the car overnight for a trip the next day. It only takes a few minutes to load them, and you never know who will be walking by your car or watching you load them.
For people with a boat, I have heard stories of people getting rods stolen out of their boat while in bait shops. Be aware. This could also apply to a truck. Back in at the space closest to the door of the bait shop.
From my understanding, most crimes are crimes like this are crimes of opportunity. Limit the opportunities you give people. Keep cars locked at all times, and that kind of stuff.

Re: Rod and Reel Loss Prevention
My surf rods (spinners) go on the rack of my truck, then a cable wraps the reels to the cross brace, secured with a brass padlock. Another longer cable can go through my beach cart, cooler, etc. in the bed of the truck and locks to the rack.
I do like the idea of the sabiki booby-trap, though
