Threadfin Shad

Post by JackJack »

I cought a 9 inch threadfin a month ago on the Juno pier. I put it in the water and got an immediate big snook, i have never gotten that response so quickly compared to other bats before, and they were not going for anything else. Any tricks for getting more threadfin? Any place to buy them? Any netters you know who get them regularly?

Threadfin Shad

Post by JackJack »

You know, i havn't got all the names downfor all the baits. When I was a boy we would get huge "greenies" or "Menhaden" we called them with red ribbon rigs with loops that the fish would just swin into. I have not seen that rig in many years. The fish I am talking about has a very shiny silver/white belly that gets very sharp edged at the belly, and has two very long threads coming off the belly as well, the threads had to be six inches long themselves, and now here's the real dufus part...I put the bait on so quick I can't truly remember if the threads came off the top of the fish or the bottom, but I remember it was about 8-9 inches long and I remember the hit from that Snook..........and I know it had those long threads, thats why I'm calling it a threadfin shad because I saw that in a book one time. Any help you could give me would be appreciated...........

Threadfin Herring

Post by JackJack »

I just googled Threadfin Herring and that is the bait I used, the description is perfect. Any idea on how to get them on a regular basis?

You catch them up and down the coast, I do not know of anywhere except the Florida Keys Bridges to catch them regularly.

Nighttime:
I bait my Sabikiki and off of bridge with down lantern

Daytime:
You find them on Shadow lines running up and down it, they will always hit the Sabikiki on the drop "NOT Baited".

End of june I caught a half dozen of them on a sabiki off the old Blue Heron bridge. Another fisherman there was calling them greenies. It was early morning with out going tide. I went back on the 4th of July and there was nothing. Can't remember what the tide was doing.

Huge help guys, I appreciate the tips. I never heard of the lantern thing, but it definitely sounds good, and the location on the shadow line helps a lot. When you say a down lantern BF, do you just mean shining a lantern in the water for a while? (thanks for the picture.)

I would say that I always see them on the bridges in the keys on shadow lines in the daytime but you have to move up and down and locate, these are Hyper baits and seems to move alot on the shadow which does make locating a pain, but once you know the area they are hanging out it becomes a little easier.

When I chum I normaly get a more variety of bait and one is the ThreadHerring and also the Goldspot .

JackJack As to the Down Lantern yes a Propane Coleman Camping Lamp on a rope, I have made a Reflector for mine so it helps to direct the light down, this reflector sits on top of lamp to also sheild the shine from my eyes so I can see better.
