I throw a 12ft Betts Super Pro 3/8 mesh in the ocean. I throw a 14ft Ceasars Custom 1/4 inch mesh inside the inlet. I throw a 8ft Betts Super pro 3/4 for mullet in the intercostal. And of course I throw a 6ft sports authority brand for snook bait in the backyard.

I throw the 12 and 14 the over the shoulder way and the 8ft and 6 regular.

You guys have problems with the net closing up before it hits the water on the pier because its such a far drop?

2-6's, 2-8's and 1-12. The 3 Small ones are 3/8 mesh. others are mullet net 1 1/4" mesh.
Any of you ever used a spanish style? They dont bag up in the center when you pull them in.
They roll up at the ends kinda like rolling your fingers towards your palms.

Im still new at cast nets. I owned a Betts Blue 7ft 1/2" mesh. Sometimes I get finger mullets stuck in the mesh. Small pilchards I get more problems. I probably will have to invest in another net with smaller holes. I love my net and it opens great. I always keep it out of the sun and always clean.

There is probably someone in your area that makes custom nets. So you could pick the size and weight. They will be able to steer you to what most locals use. You will notice that the better nets have pie slices sown together. If you can get one of them you will have less problems with it opening smooth.
In Jacksonville they have nets with a webbing that goes around the outer edge so it will close slower. You can do the same thing with duct tape. Their target is shrimp in the river when using those nets.

I know these are old posts, but since its at the top of the page i thought I'd add my 2 cents. 7 foot wal-mart el cheapo 3/8 inch mesh, I would seriously recommend adding 1 oz. weights in between each weight on the cheaper nets and even on some of the expensive ones( you can buy them online, just havnt looked where lately, they clamp on). I've used mine all over Florida and I get more fish consistently than guys right next to me because I have a quicker sinking net. You can get a net with larger squares, but then of course you lose smaller bait. The added weights help get a better spread and also help when it gets a little windier.

Another trick I use is I keep my net in one of those nylon bags you get with just string closures that can act like a backpack, I got one at a golf tournament with a vinyl liner so my back stays dry after use, you just stuff the weights in first then stuff the net and finally the cord, tangle free and hands free to cary bait in the bucket, also superlight.

Saw some tips on conditioning nets..............
If I feel energetic:
After pickin out the gilled fish and rinsing it off with the hose I dip it in the pool....it works great. Removes all odor....then back in the 5 gallon bucket it goes ready for next time.

You are crazy to throw your cast net on the asphalt. Throw your net on the grass so it does not mess up the net and lead.

Hello All,

I've been checking this site for a bit and I must say that I envy you guys having these piers and bridges to go out fishing on. In any case I noticed that throughout your posts there’s no post about how to throw a cast net without tossing the net over your back getting yourself all wet nor keeping the net out of your teeth, just would like to know if there’s a post that I missed that covers that.

Cheers!

Dennis

All this talk about cast nets got me curious. Seems like another good tool in the arsenal to catch bait so I bought a small (3-1/2ft) to learn and practice with. I had mullet like crazy in my canal last night....all I did was scare them away.

I SUCK at this

All the videos are geared to bigger nets. There isn't enough material to fold it this way. fold it that way, loop it over my shoulder, etc., etc.

Yea - I was thinking that as I was trying to throw this thing last night. Maybe I'll go straight to a 7 footer since I understand that's the max allowable by law in Broward?

Opinions?

I just use a little 6 ft diameter net..i don't have a need for anything bigger i just use it to cast net pilchards to catch bigger bait and if you get on them good you can get all you need in 1 or 2 throws. and the nets will eventually wear down and get tears in them over time so for me it is just best to buy smaller nets since they're cheaper..once they get torn up to a certain extent they aren't really worth repairing over and over.

I need some advise on the purchase of a castnet. I have never used one, but was considering purchasing one soon now that the bait is not as plentiful as in the summer. Which is the best kind to buy.....nylon or mono??

Also, does anyone know any place in the Ft Lauderdale area where a person can consistantly use a castnet and get bait this time of year?? pilchards, dines, cigars, dorks, etc??

Any advise would be appreciated!! Thanks!

So I got my Bett's cast net. I actually read the instructions lol. Says to soak the net for 12 hours in soapy water (dish soap recommended) to "loosen" it up before using it.

Hopefully I will get out and try to learn how to throw it this weekend. With all this wind I see an epic googan moment. I can't get this mental image out of my head of this thing being blown back on me and being completely covered with my own net.
