Free gaffing wahoos and bull dolphin

Post by Poseidon10/31 »

I don't usually post my boat reports, but yesterday's trip was so much fun, and had some firsts for me. We had a pod of 50 spinner dolphins swim and play next to the boat for 20 minutes, so close to the hull that I could have leaned over the side and touched one. (and probably would have been bitten and gotten my arm ripped off). That was super cool to see, you could tell they wanted to play with the boat. Found a lot of mahi out deep off Miami, with some of the biggest weed patches I've seen all summer yesterday. Found a 25# bull lit up all black on the surface, and wouldn't eat a bait. It did let me free gaff it off the bow, but the hook ripped out just as it was coming over the rail. I was pretty disappointed until we found a 40-50# wahoo on the surface. He didn't want to eat either, so the gaff came back out. Missed a gaff shot, man they can turn on a dime in an instant! Tied up a quick 3 eye shrimp, and after a dozen near perfect casts, i poked him in the back, but not deep enough and he sunk out. Now I'm 0 for 2 on quality fish using untraditional methods. Not 10 minutes later we see another head wake on the surface and I hear "you're not gonna believe it, it's another wahoo". We had already discussed what we could do differently if ever given another chance like that. I got on the bow and the redemption I so desired. After a 10-15 min fight on light drag and serious coaching, I stroked some steel into that sweet wahoo meat. Took a bite out of it's still beating heart just to mess with the clients. It was a good day.
