Having never experienced this comming mullet run.....................
Do you have to cast net them from shore to get them live? Any other way?
Do they survive in a bucket with an areator?
If you don't have live mullet is it even worth fishing during the run around the schools? Can you use artificials? Cut bait work (mullet)?
How long does the run last?
Thank you

first :?: yes... from the beach or icw.

second :?: yes... but dont put too many in there. clean water is always better as well as the temperature. if water is too hot, they might start dieing off but usually that case is with the greenies and other white bait.

third :?: yes... artificials will work. spoons, diving plugs, storm swim baits ect.

fourth :?: i dont know but a guess though. month long.

are you satisfied with these answers except the last one? :)

Thank you. Exactly what I needed to know. I guess I will buy a casting net and try to fish as much as possible when the run is on.

8) At times when the ocean is calm, large schools can go right around the pier at night, all the way out to the 3rd reef, that's as far as I have seen them, and people end up thinking they never come. But, they always come.

That is why we need a good east wind to come them close to shore.

a cast net is the best way..however you can get em with a snatch hook (not sure if legal) mullet are the most durable baitfish i use..they survive well in low oxygen situations in my experience..like it was said earlier, mullet are tougher than that whitebait crap. to answer your question on artificials yeah they will work but nothing beats live bait..match up your artificial with the pods of bait..use a similar size lure. dead bait will work too, no one believes me but i think the best bait for tarpon is a nice slab of cut bait and i've been catching big ones right off the beach in people's faces all year..the mullet run can last anywhere from up to a few days to a few weeks..sometimes it seems like a month..look for the pods of bait and position yourself ahead of the school and wait..hopefully they'll be right close tho shore in the surf. last i heard was mostly smaller baits so far.
