hook size

Post by opiato »

im targeting medium sharks about 4-7 ft, and haven't landed one yet. ive been having much more success lately attracting them, but i keep missing the hook up every time. ive been using 6/0 circle hooks under the advice of the bait shop owner at sebastian inlet where i usually fish. he says smaller hooks are better because sharks wont take a bait if they see a hook. ive heard from others that a larger hook is necessary for piercing a shark's tough mouth. am i missing the hook up because of the smaller hooks or could it be something im doing? im going to try some 9/0 j AND circle hooks next week and see how it goes but just thought id ask for some opinions in the mean time. by the way....yes, i am giving the shark time to run with the bait and eat it before reeling in. usually at least 10 seconds. is that enough? is there some cue for me to know exactly when to set the hook other than just saying "well that seems long enough"?

You should definitely be using bigger hooks

Use 9/0 or 10/0 offset owner hooks, let them run about 7 seconds then tighten the drag a good amount and pull back hard a few times.

6/0 is a bit too small. try a 10/0 offset or a 12/0 non offset. J or circle, don't bury the hook in the bait. Shark's as a general rule swallow bait almost whole. If your hook is buired in the bait it won't be able to hookup. There's lot's of mith's around Shark fishing. Seeing the hook is one of em. There are guy's that swear that taping the hook and leader with electrical tape eliminates the electrical field produced by the water flowing across the metal parts of the rig. In truth, the field is produced regardless of insulation.
Nice Boat! Now get it outa my driveway!
