Daiwa part support

Post by kblue »

I guess Daiwa Saltist 50H that I bought 10 years ago would be my last Daiwa.

Finally today, I felt like to fix my Daiwa reel so I can have another conventional for bridge fishing I plan next week.
The reel stopped working about 5 years ago (the reel didn't go to free spool) and it missed cast control cap. Since then, I never used it.

Today, I opened the reel and found out its clutch lever having free-play at the joint.
It seems simple fix by replacing clutch lever.
But after spending an hour in Internet, I concluded Daiwa part service is so poor and hard to get. I checked Daiwa web site and their service partners.
I just couldn't believe a reputable company like Daiwa has no on-line part service.
All their part-and-warranty partners want to sell repair service. The reel may be worthy of $60, and not worthy of repair service. Besides I can fix it.

I decided to fix the reel in quick-and-dirty mode. All i need some pressure at 90 degree joint between plastic lever and metal part.
I drilled the hole and tapped #6-32 and screwed #6-32 bolt with bunch of washers and lock washers.
It cost me $5. And it works again !!! Now, all I need is cast control cap. But I can cast it without it.

They take parts orders by email and I think phone also. I've always gotten the parts I've needed, and even at no charge on some occasions.

Uh-oh, I just went to their site and everything's changed. I couldn't even find a working link to schematics (there was one, but dead link). Sure hope it's just a temporary lapse in website maintenance.

I guess the problem may be their new web site. I was able to find schematics from US web site by google.
but Daiwa US website has no link to schematic URL...

This tunasreeltrouble web site is good-to-know place. They seem to have most common parts.
But it ended up costing me $8.99 part and $6.99 for shipping so $16 in total.
I want to call Daiwa on Monday as BEOWULF said. Maybe I can get new clutch lever and cast cap at $16...

Thanks Bro :toast:

The clutch lever (Daiwa Satlist 50 H) I bandaged with tapping and screw in broke again... Time to get a real part.
Call 562-375-6800 and Lady was great. Daiwa is sending a new clutch lever @$10 for part and shipping cost.

The problem was always clutch lever...I fixed it by tapping the hole and screwing bolt in with washers. But it broke again.
And I decided to use a new part.

Control cap is missing but I can live without it...

I like it even when I'm on a boat and not for casting and definitely when I'm bottom fishing the keys. I don't think you need anything if you say so. Works for you...that's good enough for me

I just can't buy something without justification... At the moment, I can't justify because I believe I don't need control cap for the way I using the reel.
If later, someone explains technically me why I need it, then it becomes a different story...

I assume you are asking about why reel manufacturer installs control cap...
It really depends on how spool shaft is designed. Control cap for bait caster reel may have more functions because bass pro needs to throw lure very accurately.

As far as I see in Saltist 50H, I understand control cap does two things

1) The copper part inside of the cap creates frictions with spool "shaft", which dampens any excessive acceleration occurring during cast.
This dampening is very important to maintain spool spin about the same speed of line going out. Well, we have to allow spool spin to exceed the line speed much more at its peak speed. Otherwise, casting distance will be small... But average spool spin has to be the same as line speed...This is the reason why we do thumb break...

2) Control cap also removes free-play of spool bearing simply because it pushes the shaft to the other side in order to create friction.
I see poor reel manufacturer may take advantage of this because they can allow some bearing free-play almost to unacceptable degree.
And for this kinda of reel, I think control cap is a must. But I don't think this is case for Saltist 50H...

Still missing something for why it is there as a function for someone fishing as you posted up a 2 reasons.

I don't think this is it. But the only thing I could think of is maybe with control cap, we may have less backlash when we drop the heavy rig for bottom fishing...I still have to put thumb on the spool...

Why don't you tell us?

I thought you were a guy that liked figuring things out. You are almost there. It's has to do with number 2 and what you just wrote a bit but not because of a bird nest.

Well, now I am a little concerned...I guess time to do some Internet search... I have been using Saltist 50H without control cap for a long time...

We covered that for your particular style of fishing it is not a function that is needed. We are now covering other styles of fishing so if we are not on the boat we will be either on a pier or bridge fishing. We also covered that it can be use for cast control but not needed... What is left when the line is in the water for this very important feature? Again, (2) of your post covers that; use it for your answer...not googling it for it

... hmm for pier and bridge fishing and not for casting... we left rod alone and clicker on... but I always didn't like to leave conventional reel as free-spool... for bait runner spinner, I can set some drag on bait runner mode... so I am guessing we can create some drag on free spool mode by locking control cap? Also, I think by locking control cap, clicker will sound more loudly... This is what I can think of without googling...
