New member from miami

Post by pwrdbypsi »

New to the site. Hoping to find some info on locations to take my son fishing. He wants to catch some big fish but I don't know where to go. Took him today to black point to fish and caught a lot of sun and a few hand sized fish. Hopefully I can find some info on here as where to take him to catch some good sized fish. Any advise where to start looking would be great.

Thanks

Welcome. You're gonna love this site. Hard to know what a 'big' fish is until we know the size of your son. Fresh or salt water?

He is only 8. He wants to catch a fish that we can fry or grill to eat. Biggest thing we caught today looked like an overgrown tadpole about 6" long.

I'm going to give your question a bump to the top to see if anyone else has any thoughts. The great fun fishing with a youngster is just going out together and hanging out as buds. Go down to any local pier and hang around and do some recon together for an hour or two just to see what's going on. It's not rocket science and if you are friendly and courteous someone will give you tips on catching a Spanish mackeral which your boy would enjoy and they are kinda easy for a beginner. Toss a live pilcher on a hook with a couple of split shot and something fun is going to inhale it in short order.

But an even more direct route would be for the two of you to hop on a half day head boat like Sea Legs II. Slip the mate a $20 to "make sure your boy has a great time" and watch the fun begin. I guarantee the two of you come home with a great dinner to celebrate the trip. Even better is to let him cut a day of school during the week when the boat is less crowded and the weather is good. He's going to learn more that day with you than he ever will in class and playing hookey to go fishing with the old man makes the adventure sweeter. That's exactly what my Dad did with me and the fun lasted a lifetime for us.

Good luck whatever you do and then post pics and a report. This Forum is driven by participation. The more you contribute the more information you get in return.

My son is also 8yrs old. I started fishing at his behest. He asked me when I would take him fishing back in September 2013. I don't have any family members big on fishing, but I've been hooked ever since. The quality time together is unmeasurable. We have not caught anything bigger than a pinfish, but he gets so excited everytime. We have fished Freshwater and Saltwater. Bill Baggs, Matheson Hammocks and a local lake. Any recommendations will be greatly appreaciated. Even a rod/reel combo or bait suggestion. Thanks.

Took my granddaughter (8) to a place called Everglades Holiday Park off Griffin in Weston. Nice little lake and stocked with all kinds of fun. Six lb. test, a bobber and a worm on any cheap rod and reel and the kids just can't miss. It wasn't crowded and they run a good show up there so I was very pleased. I don't think I'm ready to bring her to the pier so this is public but it's kinda private too. I'm sure there are many such places wherever you live down here.

Thanks for the replies. Going to try one of the charter boats in the next few weeks. Hopefully we have some luck and maybe they let him clean a fish he catches. That should make his day.
