Skunked 2 days in a row

Post by lmgorlin »

Hey all,

Hit up Markham yesterday and Krome today, got skunked both times. Was there around 5:00 pm yesterday and 4:00 pm today. Left after a few hours of not being able to get anything interested. The spillway was open on Krome, and there was plenty of action on the surface, but nothing was biting. There were a couple other guys out there today but it looked like they couldn't get anything going either.

I started off with a 10" black worm, then tried a silver X rap, but nothing doing. Has anyone had luck over there lately? Also, I'm wondering if i'm throwing the right bait for the time of day, and if i'm there too early or too late... I'm gonna try again tomorrow, but don't know where I'm going yet.

Try floating a bluegill near the land and you should be able to get something to bite.

Today at a dam near my house, people where catching bass left and right with shiners.

better action in early evening at the spillway by Krome... My kids and I usually spend the first 10 minutes catching small bluegill/ciclids with worms and then use those as bait. Usually get some decent largemouth with those. If nothing else, the bowfin and gar typically give us some action as well.

The only thing that seems to bite on artificial are the peacock bass (if you can find them).

Good luck!

i think it all depends on what artificials you use, water clarity, temp.etc etc....Ive used plastic stick worms on a floodgate past chrome and caught 3 LMB in one day...sometimes nothing...fished the X-rap and caught nada so far..but havent put in enough casts with it to be legit...i prefer the worms to be honest with you, they cast further texas rigged with a bullet weight and i can cover more water and more depth.

Only issue with soft plastics ive had is that the gars bite em in half sometimes..i've never been able to hookset a gar with the worms so my guess is they are only interested in nibbling or they are so small that their mouth is too thin...i dunno..ive had better luck some days than others.

Best time for me on those floodgates is immediately after a storm

Thanks for the tips. I've been having better luck lately, especially with watermelon seed flukes. Problem with those is they don't seem to hold up very well when texas rigged

Keep at it! Tough time of the year for freshwater! Prob the toughest time of the year! High water levels, high water temps! Sounds like you are tossing the right lures.... Are you rigging the Flukes with a wide gap hook? If water is flowing, try throwing white flukes... Toss up current, and just barely twitch as lure gets carried.... Also, if moving quick, try tossing swimbaits... Like a 4" Storm Swim Shad.... Toss up current, and just hold rod tip high and maintain constant contact with lure.....

At Markham, are you fishing the 84 Canal or the lakes inside?

Since you are in the Markham area... I can point you to much better fisheries than Markham Park....

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=weston,+f ... a&t=h&z=14

Saddle Club Road.... Explore that area.... Scope out obvious areas that one can park and not be in yards of HOMES.... You should be ok with condo/apartments....And obviously look for "shopping centers" as you can park in front and walk behind and fish.
