I am new to saltwater fishing and the the Palm Beach area. I fish mainly on piers and jetties in the ICW and ocean with little success. My question deals with line, (mono vs braid) and what line strength is recommended and would hi-vis line spook the fish. Any other information would also be appreciated

Stay away from high viz, it has no place for inshore fishing IMO. Mono vs. braid, is all preference. I use both, in different applications. But if you are fishing around lots of structure, I would stick with mono, braid does not have the abrasion resistance of mono.

Buddy Rory right there said it maaaan. Like he mentioned, Structure fishing is best with Mono because any encounters with tunnels, pilings, rocks, reef, coral heads and the list goes on, will react better under tension and help in landing that fish.

I'd say stick to mono right now for most of your applications and when you build a better base and knowledge/understanding you will then more accurately be able to figure out where/when to use braid if you want.

Braid is great and has great benefits but don't worry about getting all caught up in the hype, Mono has been around the black and back a few times.

I have to disagree Hi-Vis and inshore fishing go hand and hand when it comes to me and others
If you are fishing around other people it lets them know where your line is at and this
is a MUST!!! with some of the idiots out there
If you hook up to a nice fish around the piling/rocks/pier or docks it lets you know where
it he is headed too..
If you do happen to wrap up in somebody else line, its a breeze to untangle
if you are fishing at nite with mono hi-vi and want to know where your line is at just
hit it with a light and you will see...
If you line goes slack you will notice it right away, this at times happens when a fish picks
up your bait
It won't scare fish away... (i always use a clear leader anyway, leaders should be used
all the time IMHO)

Since you are just starting out... Stick to MONO!!! its easier and cheaper to use and
once you learn more then go on to braid if you wish..
Braid is great but it has a learning curve that will make you hate it....

Oh as far as Hi-Vi vs Clear line... it really all comes down to what you have faith in..
I gave you "Some" reason why i like it... and i hate to say this but everybody that
has seen me fish or been around me, always seem to ask about the color of my fishing
lines.. and once they see how it works for me and the fishing that i do..
its funny how they always change to it...... just saying

yea i agree with jetty i use high viz and get just the same hook up ratio next to my buddys who dont fish high viz, also as far as fishing structure mono hold up better than braid in most cases but i had some fish wrap me up with braid and it didnt brake. but since your new to saltwater stick with mono for now less head aches and you can always just switch later on

To add my two cents, if you learn to feel a fish with mono and you get comfortable and confident, when you switch to braid you will feel the fish breath on the line( no stretch, ultra sensitive) start with a good mono then graduate into braid. Plus you don't get wind knots with mono.
