Herbert I eat most fish that swim but chubs... I was catching yellowtails at Anglins one day with my cousin. I got 3 decent sized ones for the cooler. We got home and I started cooking them up for the family. I cooked one for my son, one for my wife, one for me , and my cousin had the chub he caught. Lets just say he wasn't happy compared to the dinner we had! It was horrible!!!!

Middle Keys Report 2/29/2012 Chevy Juan SOLO
So I decided to head back down again today for a few hours in the morning while the Wifey was working. I had one mission primarily that got fulfilled so I was good to go, great day to be out, the weather was amazing, water had great color, current was flowing good, blue skies, and wind was not bad at all.

Image

I had arrived a bit before sun rise around 5:30AM and started setting up shop and getting the gear ready to go. Baits are in the water not long after and was enjoying the day relaxing, and everything just felt "right".. 8)

About an hour passes and one of my Permit Rod's finally gets hit like a freight train so I knew it was on, luckily I was close by so I ran to it and set up and it was ON!!.. :pistols:

This guy was running hard and had a serious pair of shoulders, actually, maybe two sets of shoulders haha so I'm trying to muscle him and we are basically neck and neck, I get him to turn one way, then he fights the other way and makes it, I get him the other way and back at it he goes trying to out gun me. First two runs he was peeling line while I had my 4/0 Locked Drag so I knew he was a hefty one and decided to take my time with this one, he wasn't going to let me break his spirits that easy.

He takes line, I get back, and it continues on like that in open water for a couple of minutes as I'm running back and forth forcing him away from the Pilings. Later on into the battle, he finally takes me and gets me to the piling and goes through but I have my Rod low and have a great angle on him, I feel the like rubbing but not too bad so I walk him out, as soon as comes out he races into open water and I had to re adjust so the line wouldn't get slack and we both crossed and he made it to the other piling!! Same thing goes down and I walk him out, finally he takes his last two runs in the center away from structure straight peeling line again on the same locked drag and here's where I started putting the pressure and finally got him up and down.

I was alone but luckily a jogger was around to I had him help me net him, he couldn't bring him up so I put the rod down and got him up and he was a hefty one for sure, made my damn day! :dude: After taking out the hook, I cut the line so I didn't waste any time for pictures because I wanted to hurry up and get him back in the water because I knew he was fatigued from the long fight. Couple pictures and he went back in, it was tough for him to get going again but finally he got good amounts of water in him and he swam away STRONG and like a champ so I was relieved he was able to do so. Enjoy the pics fella's he was a warrior for sure.

Rod Just chillin', STRIZAXING.. :dude:

As far as the rest of the time I was there, couple of Grover's in the 12-14" Range that went back as well, Tarpon were rolling hard, Cuda's were thick but wouldn't take any freelined Thredfins I put out for them.

Fresh Bait on the house, Bait situation was the usual for right now, big schools of Thredfins like I had in the bucket all over, No hoo's anywhere, gog's, or runners/small jacks.

While take a nap I had a nasty hit on my Jigmaster, I ran over and he get me rocked quick so must've been a grouper or that big resident goliath from last time..Till next time guys, take it easy I'm out. :reeling:

Great job and incredible fish. Gad to see that you released it. I don't keep permit anymore uness they are to far gone to be released. I enjoy catching them and there are far to many better eating fish in the ocean. I have a love and respect for permit fishing. They remain one of my top three favorite fish to catch.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Man what a nice fish!!! That is gonna be hard for anyone to beat this year.
Great job doing it solo in the very spot others try all the time.
Your 4/0 on your "home made " rod. You gotta raise that Goliath next.
He might hit One of those jumbo crabs bro.
Some pinhead raided my pinfish trap today. I am almost sure it is a low life
charter.

To all you guys who replied thanks a ton and appreciate the feedback!!.. :toast:

Thanks John! Wish you coulda been there bud, and you know where they are John I wouldn't be suprised if I get a text from you next week with one that matches it or is bigger. Remember the one you got last October when we fished was a BEAST too! :toast:
And yes that Goliath is just getting plenty of food man just sitting there, he was on a different piling today though hah.

Miguel I didn't get a weight on him, would've loved to but I want to say he was pushing 26lb's or so, maybe a little more, I'm not exactly sure at this point man lol

The fight was just incredible though, run after run it was non stop, he had me moving all over the place, hitting different angle's and all, he for sure made me work for him. :dude:

That sucks man. Remember that trick I was telling you at the bridge, about putting a dummy trap, with treble hooks stuck in the rope every foot? Might be time to do it.

Wowww, I bet you still have the shakes. I'm thinking 30ish. I got the one in this thread last year (http://boatlessfishing.com/forum/viewto ... 10&t=25390) and it was 24 lbs. I'm 6'3" and holding it a little different, but yours looks like the big brother. The weight doesn't matter all that much -- congrats.

That sucks John! I hope you still have the trap.

Ron lost that permit because of those hardly grab anything closed circle hooks, two in a row, LOL
