Longer isn't necessarily better. Guys up north pull up huge YFT with less than 6' rods. Jigging rods are made strong to leverage those suckers. DGMW I'm no expert but it's just MHO that you want to go light as possible for jigging cause you get tired quickly especially if we go deep. We're also gonna be at for 7 hours.rare wrote:sepaik wrote: This is true, especially now that Groupers are closed. However, the Muttons are still at the bottom and the Grey Tile at 400 ft or so are gonna need something heavy to get to them.
Ron this is why I want a longer rod for these jigs.

Fishings the Lucanas style jigs requires a softer and longer rod to fish them properly.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

For the Lucanus style jigs you can use any rod with a soft tip like the Calstars. I have an 8 foot Calstar that I used to use for snapper fishing from boats and works great for Lucanus style jigs and has the back bone to get the grouper out, has done so in the Tugas many times.
About getting to the bottom first. You can use all the 400 and 500 grams jigs you want. I will stay with 300 grams max. I will give you a smile as I see you sitting down thinking about letting another one of those heavy jigs go down.
If you can learn anything about jigging let it be that weight doesn't get down faster, it's the shape of the jig! When you buy your jigs take a good look at them and think about it. Hint, works the same as mono versus braid. This is the last time I will talk about 400 grams and up jigs for South Florida, so take it for what it's worth. It's your wallet not mines.
