dumb question--for me at least...What's the diference between a jigging trip and normal driftboat trip? Any different gear required??

I have an equipment question too, I have a Penn battle 7000, and heavy star rod, would that he sufficient to drag the fish off the bottom or do I need a new rig?

These trips are specifically for vertical jigging, using braided line and butterfly-style jigs. If people try to bottom fish, or fish kingfish jigs, it will cause lots of tangles and headaches.

For a first trip I would just use that Charles. If you like it, then buy something else. What line do you have on it?

50lb braid with a heavy mono backing, and a fluoro leader, good enough?

My suggestion for you guys just starting out w/ jigging, just use what you have. Don't spend a ton of money on gear if you're not sure you'll like this kind of fishing. My first few trips trying it, I jigged with a Baitrunner 4500 and a Saltist 50 with mono, and caught fish. Any rod and reel strong enough to fish 40-50 lb braid will handle most of what you get into here in S Florida, unless you hook into a smoker wahoo, huge black, etc.
