What is your opinion on these red light cameras going up everywhere?

Sunrise has agreed to pay Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions $47,500 a month when all 10 cameras are in operation.

I understand that some money (less than half of the fine issued) will go to the city but cutting out local police and income that will also be used in the city and state kind of stinks.

Sunrise ready to launch red-light camera program
Fines to begin on Aug. 15 after two-week warning period
August 01, 2011|By Susannah Bryan, Sun Sentinel

Red-light cameras are coming to Sunrise.

Starting Monday, red-light runners heading northbound on University Drive at Northwest 25th Court will be captured on camera.

The $158 fines begin on Aug. 15 after a two-week warning period. If not paid within 30 days, the fine turns into a $277 traffic citation.

Nine more cameras are scheduled to come online soon. City officials could not say when.

Sunrise has agreed to pay Arizona-based American Traffic Solutions $47,500 a month when all 10 cameras are in operation.

Under Florida law, cities with red-light cameras are required to share the $158 fine with the state. Sunrise will collect $75 for each violation.

Sunrise had planned to start its red-light camera program in April but ran into permitting delays, city officials said.

Cameras are also planned at the following intersections: Westbound on Oakland Park Boulevard at University Drive; northbound on Flamingo Road at Oakland Park Boulevard; southbound on Flamingo Road at Northwest 136th Avenue; northbound on Flamingo Road at Blue Dolphin Boulevard; southbound on Flamingo Road at Sunrise Boulevard; northbound on Nob Hill Road at Sunset Strip; northbound on Nob Hill Road at Oakland Park Boulevard; southbound on University Drive at Oakland Park Boulevard; and eastbound on Sunrise Boulevard at Sunset Strip.

George Orwell would be proven right on the idea but wrong on the date. Wonder how he would feel about that?

I dislike them. Sad that with more than half the cities using them ready to scrap tthem that Sunrise would get them. Ft Lauderdale already said that they didn't make anywhere near what they needed to cover them. Davie just enstalled them and they are already trying to figure out how to get out of the contract. They are nothing more than revenue streams for cities.

When I was in Austin last year, I saw on the news that the citizens of Texas (democrats, republicans, and libertarians) got together in huge rallies and protested the red light cameras. They succeeded in proving to the texas supreme court that these cameras are unconstitutional and got them banned state-wide. We need stand up and fight for our rights too

However, i just checked and the cameras are back up again. So basically government is going to keep fighting us

I think it sucks that some enterprising biz-person came up with the idea, is making a ton of cash, and its not me.

Heard rumors that it actually cost more for the city for fight the tickets than they make.. that biz dude still gets his cut either way. Problem being the Ticket-Clinic places have figure out how to fight the ticket in courts, unfortunately that weathy biz-person does not have ot bear that cost the city attorneys do.

Recently heard Davie, who I notce just had them installed at University and Griffin, is sue-ing the company they contracted with to get out of their contract because the tickest are actually costing the city way to much money.

Never understood the concept of why they are needed, except that it was supposed to be an instant profit maker for the city. Why not have the local law enforcement guys start giving tickets for people running red lights again, like they do every morning on Griffin road with them laser/radar guns for speeders.

You hear about the funeral procession that had police escort (off duty I assume) stopping on-coming traffic, waved the procession through and almost every car in the procession was ticketed by the camera operator

I am not an expert. don't know nothing about nothing. How ever.... every city that has tried this comes out in the red. I say "get rid of them". Give me a ticket if I violet the law. When I turn on a green light, the light turns red, take my pic, send me a ticket.....I can beat it every time. Now with that being said, I dare ony one to catch me turing on a red light, for that matter catch me doing any thing other then not spelling correctly.

Every city that has tried them was ALREADY in the red, that's why they are (were) trying them...for revenue, plain and simple.

Ok thats what I was thinking. FF I was hoping you would chime in. The money the city pays could go to atleast 12 or more officers annually. The city would spend the money instate. The officers would spend the money they make instate. (house,groceries,ect....) Wow that would put about a half a million a year into Florida economy and probable most in the city of Sunrise. The city is not trying to make a better city they are plain and simple trying to make money. We all see that at the school zones. Motercops pulling people over and ticketing them for going 17mph. Please! If it aint about the money then I don't know what you are talking about.

Heard that Davie beat their way out of the contract on the news this morning... good bye cameras.

I see a couple rather new cameras at the intersection of Sheridan NB on Flamingo also, Pines Blvd and Flamingo.

Sunrise had had them for a while now.. along Flamingo the first 2 lights South of where Oakland bends into Mingo heading towards the BA center or Sawgrass, also at a few other profitable intersections along OPB and Sunrise.
