Whats a Gog?

Post by jackpell »

I have a question about the bait "Gog". I see the term Gog to describe live bait and I don't know what is a Gog. I have seen goggle eyed jigs. But I see where several times a poster will mentioned that he caught a fish using 1/2 a Gog. or a poster may say he floated a Gog and caught a fish. So what is a Gog? If its a live bait can someone direct me to a picture of one of these Gog's. Thanks Jack

Goggle eye aka bigeye scad. Prime bait but can be hard to catch, they come around the piers at times of the year, best time to catch them is right before sun up.

What's the procedure for this? Never got one on a sabiki, that's for sure.

I've caught small ones on sabikis at Dania while catching pilchards. Usually you get about 1 baby gog for every 100 pilchards.

At best it's hit or miss on Anglen's. You can go 3 day's and catch none and the 4th day you'll throw 50 in a cooler in 30 min. That's about all the bite last's anyway. If you brine them right they keep frozen very well for month's.
Nice Boat! Now get it outa my driveway!

One time on Dania Pier, I could not keep them off my sabaki while tring to get pilchards. At that time I did not know what they were. Very good live bait. Shallow or deep.

I've heard the guys fishing the tourneys will pay upwards of $75/doz if their nice and fresh.

I'll catch, brine and vacuum pack/freeze ahead of time but I've paid $30/doz for live Gog's on the way down to the Tortugas head boats.

I've seen them go for a lot more then $75/dozen during tournaments. $30/doz for live ones is a pretty good price.

Ed Hoffman, I would have to look at my notes as to exactly were he is. He's around MM89 I think? He doesn't work out of a shop, you meet him in a dark ally near the water to do the exchange lol

If someone needs it, PM me for his number. I don't really want to post it

Mike; is that the guy right off US1 on the frontage road? He's just South of a coldwell banker realtor office on the west side of US1, North side of the bridge from Smugglers cove.
