What do you like best,Long rod or short rod for sharking!!!

Post by Fla Shark Hunter »

I was always told shorter rod= more pressure on the shark, but also more on you. Long rod less pressure on shark but better for you in a long fight. I go with short rods. In the 6'6" to about 8'. What do you guys think is the best and why?? I know short rods are crap for bridges and pier's but i have not had a bad experince with it yet, I am sure one day i will learn about that hard way.

You can applied better pressure with the shorter rod. For the bridge/pier the longer rod allows better leverage when shark is close to the bridge/ pier structure.

I've been using a Penn standup slammer rods. Very short I notice I can put max pressure on the fish and turn him when it's needed with the shorter rods

For the beach, or anywhere with no obstructions, short rod all the way. Bridge/pier/jetty, gotta have that longer rod 8 ft plus to power them out from the structure.

The olny thing i have noticed about short rods is they seem to have more flex in them. Is that because what they are made of,or because they are so long??

One thing i like about long rods on the beach is they get above the weed line when the sea weed is bad.

for transportation with car. short rods IMO are better then longer rods cuz they dont hang out much if at all. my lil shark rods fit all the way in the vehicle with the windows rolled up.
long rods i say are best when you can cast them from the shore or pier without yak.
and of course the line is above the railing higher.
short rods easier to handle and dont have much weight like the longer rods do.
the size of reel does matter more then the rods but every lil weight counts. :)

Depends on the blank action and material. Each manufacture blanks are different. You can get them soft or stiff tip depends on your fishing application.

From the beach, short rods all the way. It is easier on the angler and robs the fish of leverage. Paired with a good reel and harness, a short rod will do some serious work on the beach.

My shark rods are calstar grafighters 50-130 cut down to 5'2"

I have the very same blank for my trolling rod. 6.6" 2 piece. Very light and the wall thickness gives it the nice stout backbone. Hopefully I will break it in this year.

team rebels rods are 7' 6", at least tylers and viktors are. Everyone I fish with likes the long rods, full length gator 80-130's or 80-unlimiteds depending on who it is. It get's the line up higher away from the weeds and gives you a better angle when you drop really close to the reef like we have on our beaches. The 10ft's also flex alot more and when you fish like we do, heavy braid all the way with only 100yrds of 150-200lb mono there isn't much stretch in the line, I think the longer rod also helps to burry the circle hooks in the jaw bone where it's even hard for us to get them out when the fish is on the beach. We also fish short 12-16" butts with 16" being a tad bit long, reason is in the harness I don't want to have the reel in my face.

I agree all the way and this is my main reason for fishing a longer rod... once the hook is set i would prefer a shorter rod, but thats life

you have to think abouts rods like this,

a rod is like see-saw the person with the longer end has the avantage..

if the shark has the longer end then it will be harder for you to pull on him..

long rods are good for bridges and piers,casting..

short rods are for fighting fish..

look at all the jigging rods and tuna rods they are short....

8ft rod for the beach sharks is max for me... my rods are 7,6

rods dont set hooks sharp hooks do!!!
