yaking off indiatlantic

Post by fixed80 »

I headed to the beach sometime around 9am. water was wow calm although chilly when i got wet. i decided to target kings so i had on a kingfish spoon in gold tape color.
not much was happening but there were must of been a thousands of huge pilchards and lots of hoos off the beach.

just so as i got to the surf, i started trolling. nothing.
i did that over an hr by trolling shallow, far out, zig zag, etc.
but nothing happened. later in the morning i trolled to the 400 or 500yrd
mark and thats when i had a hit. it was disgusted to find out
that a shark(1 1/2 or 2)hit the lure. did see a larger shark i dont know...
about 5 feet under it so i goat the shark to the yak for a release and began to troll again.

still staying far out i saw a cobia come to the boat but couldn't throw anything to hit since i was just trolling. anyway, after seeing the cobe i got another hit. it peeled some line off reel and took off with speed. after a short battle the fish ended up
being a bonita around 10lbs. oh yeah i kept it for you know what. :)

so i put it in the yak and trolled back in. nothing though. i saw more schools of pilchards
below the boat and a school of macks in with them up to 4 or 5lbs. they sure were big
too. oh... got hit on the spoon again but just a small shark.

man these sharks will hit lures trolled behind the boat. i hope next time it aint a hammer
bigger than the yak.

NJ! I'd take a bonito from a yak anyday, great sport. I have recently caught sharks on xraps, even while the plug lies motionless for over 30 seconds. They are really chewing.

i hate it when sharks nail things like that while trolling. it annoys me. i might go back down on Monday just south of the board walk. your welcome to come.
i want more bonita so hopefully i'll get some this week.

check your pm by the way.

went today and trolled 4 hrs. nothing amazing just one small bar jack(i think).
wish it was a west wind as they are the killer of winds to go out fishing especially in a yak off the beach. bait was there but not in numbers(like on Saturday) and they were about a half mile off the beach. might go to a different spot on Wednesday and check out some random buoy that was placed(for whatever reason)in another area.

4 hrs is a long time to paddle, especially when the fishing is slow.

What does the buoy look like?

i really dont know if it is a buoy but it certainly looks like one(BTW its north of Indian harbor beach). i'll check it out some day. oh and yes..... 4 hrs is punishing. i felt so bad when i got home i pretty much passed out on the bed. didn't get no sleep though cuz i had to leave the house to go work 4 my father.
