catherines AKA hammerhead big ray

its a day of the nurses slow nibbling bites and chewed up crushed baits and we are backing in the sun with a real lite west breeze when we get another nurse bite on the 12/0 catherine picks it up and cranks like hell to set the hook the fish acts like a nurse but alot heaver i hold onto her harness and can feel the pull of the fish when it makes its short runs but it doesn't go far and a little back and forth we are thinking its the king of all nurse sharks she works it closer and into the wade gut wear it just stops and iam thinking its not hung up there are no rocks on this beach so i help by hand lining it and i can feel the head shacks well so i thought it was actually wing beats of the biggest sting ray i have ever seen caught she works it close enough to leader and the tail is so thick i can actually get a tail rope on it and it takes four of us to get it on the beach we try to lift it up to see if we can get the hook out no deal we couldn't lit it high enough to evan see its mouth so i cut it close take the pics and send it on its way .i got him in the water and he sits there watching me while he gets his breath back and slowly turns and flies away but after an hour he comes back and stairs at us for about 15 minutes and leaves again i guess sort of a thank you for letting him go and not filling a couple freezers with shark bait..he measured 11ft nose to tip of tail and 6ft wing tip to tip

iam with you geo way to old and majestic of a fish to kill but if he was 4ft or less he would have ben bait for sure ..he had two barbs one was 6 inches the other 7 inches before drying we will bring them to the barbecue to show them off

That was one hell of a sting ray...Props to Catherine again... :toast:

Awesome catch! I don't think i would have the heart to use it as shark bait either. That is a once in a lifetime catch! Congrats :dude:

That is more ray than I ever want to try to drag in. Great work and great catch.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Wow thats amazing Mark, biggest Ray ive ever seen by far. p.s it was wierd seeing "my new rod/reel" in those pictures.. haha thanks again.. haven't caught anything big on it thus far. but got a a few nice blacktips.. hopfully will get something big soon..
