The Fishin Kid Returns
Notice: On Sunday, April 12th, the Fishin Kid returns to South Florida. Never in the anals of Surf Fishing has there been a more proficient and deadly Surf Caster. When you see the Pompano pulled onto the beach or flung over the rail when no one else is hardly managing a strike you will know that you are in the presence of the Fishin Kid. Don't bother asking him what his secret is. He won't tell. If you try and view his rigs, he'll hide them. If you think you see something you don't.
Once "Pompano John" of the little rusted out Toyota fame got a look at one of the Kid's Rigs he hauled up after a break off. It didn't do him any good.
Soon....The Fishin Kid returns.

I guess I may as well pack up my marbles and go home
The problem with writing about religion is that you run the risk of offending sincerely religious people, and then they come after you with machetes.

That's not comparing yourself to much. Perhaps you meant "annals"? Kind of a large distinction between the two. Thanks for gracing us with your appearance though.Fishin_Kid wrote: Never in the anals of Surf Fishing has there been a more proficient and deadly Surf Caster

I for one am excited at this return. Not since BUCKETHEAD's post have I awaited a members next post as much as this. I do miss Pompano John and the old crowd that kept me in line when I was a pier rat .
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

May or may not be a joke but I have fished Anglins for 25 years or so now. If he fished with Pompano John I probably know him. Nice to run into some of the old crowd I grew up fishing with.

DANG, the fishin kid IS BADDD ASSSSSS. Well here is another returning 'kid' to be a-feared of.
I was once the lookdown king of Pompano Pier. Mmmmmmm yummy epaxials.
We used to bring an elec frypan and eat them suckers right up in the house at the end of the pier.
I used to catch so many fat 30 pound snook off those lanterns the pier got smelly from snook poop.
I used to balloon out mullets and pull in so many cobia and tarpon they both almost went extinct in 1985.
Oh man back in these days the blues would really run (late 70's and early 80s). I chased em.
But I got barred from pompano pier for getting drunk and throwing a shopping cart over the side. But I was only 15 years old.
That was over 20 years ago, wonder if I'm still barred?
So I started catching it up big time at anglins, lake worth, 7 mile instead, so much that people would run when they saw me pull up to prevent their embarrassment.
Then I got recruited by the KGB and had to leave the country. Now I'm returning to the homeland! Be there fishing again in a few weeks.
"POMPANNOOOOOOOO"
There used to be a crazy old man who would yell this out loud all the time. He would curse alot and talk insanely about wahoos and stuff. Those were some days. Looking forward to hitting it again. Need to get new gear again though, most of it long gone. I'm so tired of catching sailfish off snoopy rigs I might as well get some decent stuff. There used to be someone I think named Chris we called him 'rich kid' for some reason. And there was a guy named Ben with super long rods. These guys knew their poop. And Ken. Greg, Vinnie, John... Still around? They taught us kids lots and gave us beer.

You Never Know
The Fishin Kid was out there Sunday. Sure, the wind laid down and the water was both clear and devoid of current. But did that stop The Kid?...No, it did not. The Kid was throwing a new scientific theory at the Pompano, developed during his 15 year sabbatical from the South Florida Surf.
There is that one thing about surf fishing and of course it’s, "You just never know". You never know when, what or who is going to surprise you. Whodofthunk salty surf fisherman would have caught my "annals" typo. I'm calling it a typo and as far as anyone else knows it was a typo and Not The Kid forgetting how to spell.
Pompano John was about five foot nothing. Almost as wide as he was tall. He drove a rusted out import. Surely rusted out from spending too much time parked close to the breaking surf near some favorite Pompano hole. That was fifteen years ago and there were a lot of old guys then that made great comrades at Anglins Fishing Pier and places nearby. Entry at Anglins then was 3 dollars and if you arrived early there was no parking fee. There were far fewer beachfront high rises too. There was even a saltwater feed to bathe one's fleas. Between the fees and the years, I have to wonder how many of the old guys remain. Some have undoubtedly moved on to cost effective fishing locales, if Pompano John has moved on to that great Sebastian Inlet in the Sky, Heaven's angling knowledge base is all the richer for it.
Good Fishin John

Pompano John, Mackeral Annie, Doc , and Wahoo have all passed and those are just the ones I can think of off hand. Randy moved to north a decade or so ago . The old crew has moved on for the most part. I haven't seen Vinnie in years.

Re: The Fishin Kid Returns
I remember Mackerel Annie and Doc, can't recall who Wahoo was. There was this older European couple. The man's name was Jan I believe. Jan was excitable and half blind and crossed lines regularly. Neither was there Tuesday 4/14 when I observed the best Pompano Fishing day at Anglin's Pier I have ever witnessed.
The wind blew from the SE all day. Records say the wind was 17 mph with gusts to about 21. The Fishin Kid is going to disagree with those reports. It was a substantial wind, certainly above 20 mph most of the day, with gusts to 30. The top fishing began at about 2:30 p.m. By about 4:00 p.m. my partner and I had our limit. We could easily have caught 30 fish a piece, and some nearly did. With a harvest of that nature, it was apparent many could not abide by the regulations. On two of my casts the sinker didn't hardly strike bottom and the Pompano were on my fleas with the rod still in my hand.
I scored a triple, the first landed triple of my career, as well as two doubles. Yes, that’s 7 fish, my partner took 3, I took the rest, after all, I am the Fishin Kid. But truth be told everyone caught fish. I'd have to guess 400 Pompano plus came over the rail in that hour and a half. Blasphemy of all blasphemies most of them were taken on Jigs. When the Fishin Kid returns, he will have a Jig pole, but will at least have the consideration to not cast until a Pompano comes over the rail and proves the casting is warranted.
Pompano fishing has definitely changed since the Fishin Kid outcaught Pompano John and Randy. Live Fleas are no longer King.

Not a bad way to go. Rod in hand, fish on the flea or maybe just excited about the prospect of a bite. The Fishin Kid can remember getting excited like that years back. It was a good way to lose fish. The Fishin Kid is gonna live a long, long time.
It was funny out there Tuesday. The jiggers work close to the pier and rush like crazy to land a hooked fish. After hooking a Pompano at Anglin's and working him to a flip location some Jigging Pier Rats were eager to offer advice, "Reel him in fast, don't give him a chance to cross lines." The Fishin Kid retorted, "That's probably a good strategy for a Jig, but I'm not letting that fish cross lines, I'm fishing on the way in."
The Fishin Kid doesn't generally reveal secrets of the trade, but since Zebco asked he threw that little anecdote above in.
Never saw a day when 5000 Pompano came over the rail. Little skeptical of that, but the guesstimate of 400 in that hour and a half was conservative.

Howdy y'all, dream team member here... Was 'wahoo' the guy who yelled 'waaahhhhooooooooo' and cursed like a sailor? I remember old Vinnie too, a sweetheart. Have completed the move and have unpacked just enough boxes to finally fish! Found the old squidder and sigma-40 thanks god haven't used them in a decade or more. My old baitrunner 4500 is too f***ed up to use so I got a brand new 6500B today mmmmm much nicer. Think I'll hit up Anglins in the morning and hopefully not make a fool of myself
