04/22/09 In the hunt for big tarpon...

Post by swordfish »

Called up Acid, told him of one of my spots and it didnt take long for us to decide to head down and go on the hunt. At first I was under the impression that he was out for meat (aka slot snook, keeper grovers etc...) However, he then tells me that he wants a big tarpon, so I told him well see what we can do and we headed out.

Set out of the marina, the night was perfect, 5mph out of the East made for a very dry, very calm and soothing ride out to the grounds. When we arrived, there was a lot of activity, it was the top of the incoming right about to start outgoing... I made a comment "These conditions just dont happen bro, perfect tide, moon, wind and time is hard to find." We saw a lot of activity and started to position the boat close to the structure. I grabbed his Penn Baitrunner and hooked a shrimp on a 4/0 circle, with 50lbs leader, the mainline being 40LBS PP.

Tossed him out, and let it fall back, I told Ryan that If I managed to hook something I would give it to him, since he was busy in the trolling motor making sure we kept out of harms way and in the perfect position for a strike.

First drift and as I let line out I admired the night and took it all in, this is heaven, this is what I live for. As the shrimp got closer to the structure I felt him get nervous and try to jump, just then I felt the "tap", that familiar tap that signals that youre about to have a screaming reel. I felt the fish, and handed the rod to ryan, told him we may have a snapper or something small. He grabbed the rod and set the hook, and we were off to the races!!!

We came within a foot of hitting the structure and he managed to both fight the fish as well as drive us out into open water where he led the fish gracefully. I believe it was then when the fish realized it was hooked, that baitrunner was SINGING. We fought it for a while, I would say like 30 minutes, and we didnt see color till about 3/4s into the fight, and when we would shine the light on her she would flip and go again for the ride.

Finally, she came boatside, it was a tarpon, I estimate at 100+, she was at least 5 feet long and I certain pushing 110 or so, but well call her 100 since it was a leader release, I had the leader in my hand and a quick swipe of her tail poped us off. Ryan was yelling and howling about the catch and was truly happy, which in turn made my night, so no matter what happened after that it was Mission Acomplished!

After that we worked hard to get hooked up again, but it seems the fish were simply not feeding on shrimp, and we didnt switch to fishing pilchards so we didnt get any more hits. We did move at the end of the night and made about a 10 mile run, to another spot that yielded 2 keeper mangroves, and a few runs here and there. The trip home was beautiful, as the city skyline graced us and the clear skies caressed us on our return trip.

The tarpon made our night, and I am positive there are many more to come like that, Ryan's boat runs like a dream, and shes stable, as well as solid, not to mention very fast!!!

Great report brother...
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Great report! I love the feeling of running in on a calm night or minutes before it is completely black after you catch a great fish. It is such a great feeling.

Thanks guys, but really all the credit goes to Ryan, he was fighting, AND driving the boat at the same time while I spectated and yelled "youre gonna get spooled!" a few times! I merely told him where and he did his thing! lol The fish put up a hell of a fight, and Ryan led her well, like a trooper! Im looking forward to hooking up like that soon as well... Cant wait for a run to the flats, I want a slam, for either of us, I know exactly where to go too! eatpop Stay tuned ladies and gents, its coming!

Yeah there you go, lol sorry, again, I know it was a baitrunner, not sure shimano made it or Penn. Ryan set the record straight. Snookman954, yes they switched over to fish, next time we go on the hunt, Ill make sure we get some mullet, if the fish are feeding it will be a sure hookup on every single one, from my experience.

Nah bro, Ive just been around long enough to know to observe them. Now the mullet start moving back up north and thus the tarpon switch over from the now (small) shrimp, to the more rewarding mullet. Keep in mind, they are trying to get the most out of a meal, for the least amount of energy. That is why they lay in wait behind pillars and where water slows down, so that food can get washed to them, drifting in the current. This concept applies to just about every pelagic fish, some Benthoid species, aka flounder etc do the same.

So, snapper stick close to structure and the best hands down way to nail them is with some live bait such as pinfish or pilchard on a small yellowtail jighead, then drifted as naturally as possible past said structure, it is my way to weed out the little guys. In the bridges in the keys, that tactic has been known to take a few cuberas over 6 lbs.

Looking forward to some more fishing with Acid!

You can still get them on the shrimp till about end of May just you will produce bigger snook and tarpon on the mullet/horse pilchards. If you looking for slot snook use the biggest shrimp you can get on a troll rite, i got 12 keeper snook last May on shrimp. People at Dania pier were so mad lol, id show up with a dozen handpicks after work and 1 or 2 casts ill have a keeper, and end up giving my bait away.

HAHA that is too funny bro, I have been known for doing that down south as well. One night, the most memorable, it was on the first cast, and first shrimp, summer shrimp too. After that I took off the troll rite and just drifted them live on a 1/0 short-shank for tarpon, the other 11 shrimp that is ;-).
