While we were walking the dog tonight, there were schools of mullet getting absolutely crushed all over the place. So of course I ran back home and grabbed a rod and a couple of lures, I threw a small mullet colored popper, a DOA terroreyez and a dark Yozuri...had one fish blow up on the popper but missed the hooks, but otherwise nothing. What do you all like to fish at night in the back waters?...I'm assuming the fish crashing the bait were jacks, snook and ladyfish..this is in the Loxahatchee River, pretty far back, I like to use light tackle (3000 spinner and 10 lb braid), not my heavy snook gear I use at the inlet.

Because you have a popper don't really mean you have to pop it. At night most jacks are kind of lazy so do the same but with the popper or a skitterwalk and not with your actual dog Light color poppers in the yellow or red/white is what I like to use in the dark. In the shadow lines I like dark poppers and skitterwalks.

I like DOA glow shrimp or sub surface or topwaters at night. Bright colored lures on dark nights and dark colored lures on bright nights .

Yeah, it is so bright out tonight with the full moon, I was able to tie knots without a flashlight, so I was using dark lures. Screw it, I'm going to net some mullet tomorrow night and get them. It was crazy how many fish there were busting bait, it looked like the mullet run. I'm thinking it may have had to do with the spillway about a mile upstream being open.

Run to the spillway, RUN!!! LOL ...The dark lure will work, just don't give them so much action, it's fun watching it get hit.

I've been trying to figure out a way to get in there since I moved here. I've never seen anyone fish there, I'm pretty sure the police keep it on lockdown.

The spillways north of you produce some hog linesiders. My buddy did two fish over 45 inches last year in a few nights of fishing. Big lures so not a lot of hits but the hit or two a night is a legit 20 plus lb. fish. Night fishing with the gates open.

Just have to get in there Rory!!..Glow Shrimp works good like mentioned, I've also had luck with a buck tail jig in the charteruse feather with white head combo, as well as an all white bucktail worked in different methods.

If the spillway was open and water was moving, I'm sure those snook were just hitting them even harder. Its the same with the spillway in my area. Gives the night a crazed and rushed feel where you feel like every drop is going to be a good hit.

If you can score some mullet do it and hold on when you feel that thump.

I like Calcutta swimbaits 4inch or 3inch for spillway action.
