A Boynton Beach tow boat captain was charged with boating under the influence after he drove a pair of stranded boaters in circles for hours and ran out of fuel, authorities said today.

Timothy R. Pooler, 63, of Boynton Beach was dispatched last Thursday evening to help two men whose boat had broken down 25 miles east of Delray Beach. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Pooler arrived four hours after he was dispatched.

He hooked the boats together and then drove around in circles for hours in the darkness, the men told investigators.

By daybreak, Pooler asked one of the men to drive his boat. The tow boat ran out of fuel and the men provided fuel from their boat, the FWC said.

By that time, the engine of the disabled boat had cooled sufficiently for it to regain power. The men towed Pooler's boat until they decided to cut it loose.

A second tow boat was dispatched when the men's boat shut down again. The second tow boat assisted the disabled boat and the FWC picked up Pooler's.

They all arrived just after 9 a.m. Friday at a marina in Jupiter.

Pooler told the FWC officers that he had consumed alcohol on Thursday and should not have reported for duty. He also acknowledged being on several prescription medications, the FWC said.
