Got to the pier around 6:30. got bait and got cut 4 times by macks. Tarpon were rolling everywhere.Around 10 it got interesting. I was freelining a gog on a light rod that I brought with 12 Lb. Stren on it and WHACK. A 40 plus inch snook gets me it the pilings and spits the hook. Then this one dude gave me a bluerunner he was reeling in. It was maybe a foot long. I freelined it on my TLD and I got a 20lb Cuda. We landed him and some guy wanted it to eat so I gave it to him. Hope its not poisoned.
It was a great day aside from me because everyone was gettin a hookup with a mack. Well I may go back tomorrow to see what I can get.

Ya I went last nite one guy lost a cuda cause it fell out of a net and that was about it. I thought that bait was pretty easy to catch. I got a lot of different types of bait, Gogs, runners, pilchards, dines, and some others. I didnt catch any fish, but I saw some HUGE spawning snook by the beach, and I had one follow my DOA.

Went this morning, water was crystal-clear but still managed a couple yellowtails and also a very appetizing looking nice size blue runner. I've been hearing lately that runners get an unfair rap so I took it home to see for myself.
I filleted, skinned and cut out the dark strip and fried it up next to the y-tail in olive oil. Perhaps Rijkaard is one of the few here who will not think this is ridiculous, but that runner was really good! It was as good or better than the yellow tail (which I think are over-rated anyway).
Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Skinned and Blood Line Removed will increase the palatability of any fish 100 times. I eat em all the time. In fact, since they are SO DAMN Abundant off DFP these days, it may be time fo another batch of smoked fish dip.Lone_Fisher wrote:

You know I've even tried lizard fish and bonito... two species I won't be trying again though, lol. They're each disgusting in their own unique way. Tho I gotta say the lizard fillets at least looked appetizing.

lol...
I eat blue runners all the time and if cooked like above they are really quite good. Fresh is the way to go, I had some in my freezer for a week or two and it was very strong, the rest is going to turn into chum.
Small bonito are really good and comparable to blackfin IMO. Just bleed and gut them right away and keep it well-iced. The bigger bullets have a decent amount of meat and it is hardly bloody. Haven't tried a bigger one yet, but if you use the darker meat for bait and keep the lighter stuff it might be good. Even if it is strong, I have heard that it makes good fish salad at least.

Got there @ 8. TONS of pilchards and some gogs. I got about 2 dozen pilchards with some gogs and sardines mixed in. I was talking to the guy that runs the shack on the peir because he was out fishing before there was a lot of people needing to pay to get on the pier. He hooked up to a fish that was pretty far out with a freelined gog. He got it close to the pier; It had to have been the biggest Snook I have ever seen in my life. Probably near 40lbs. or so. This thing had to be over 45in. Well on 12lb. test, theres not much you can do but hope to turn his head away from the piling. But before it got in the pilings, the line snapped. That guy must have been so pissed. Well I was freelining too and a little cuda swiped my pilchard right off the hook. I was walking back to my bucket when my bottom rod started screaming. Picked it up and gone. Well not too much after that. Only a couple mack follows on the freeline and a water spout pretty close to the pier. You could see all the boats scrambling to get out of its path. I'll try to get back next week.

Yea. Got there around 11. got bait and nothing for about an hour and a half or so till' my bottom rod went off screaming. I set the hook and it ran under the pier and out the other side. I tilted my rod so the line wouldnt cut on the concrete egde of the pier. It smoked half of my reel. My dad said he saw what it was. He said stingray. I didn't care to fight it so I just held the spool tight and SNAP. After that my dad caught a nice runner on a pilchard so I put him on the bottom and a HUGE Snook grabbed it. I waited three seconds to let him eat the bait because it was a pretty big runner. I set up on him and he spit the runner right out. I didnt want him swallowing the hook so I guess i didn't wait long enough anyways After that, I cut the runner in half and whipped him out on my TLD. About 20 mins. later my clicker clicked twice. I didn't even bother to pick it up. Well I reeled in just a mouth. Probably a Cuda that came at me so the clicker didn't scream. On the way home, my dad and I stopped off at Atlantic bait and tackle. I asked where the Mack bobbers were. (The ones you fill with water). I picked up a pack and the guy said "If you don't like those, I've got some different ones" so I followed him to the back of the store. He opened his cooler to reveal a 42 pound permit. It was huge. Lucky for me. He told me the general area where he caught it. I'm heading there tomorrow so I'll post a report when I get back.

Went out about 6 am today, left around 10am. A couple small snappers were caught when I first got there, then went cold. I didn't do much. Some people were catching blue runners on squid later on. Saw a couple of macks in the bait wells. Nothing really big.
Met up with kngfshman. Good guy. Lots of advice.

Fished from about 11am till 4pm. The water was like glass when we arrived but after the afternoon storm there was a slight chop and the wind changed from dead west to south-southwest.
There were lots of pilchards all day with lots of big snook feeding on them...except when those pilchards were on a hook. Nevermind, the snooks are out of season anyway.
About the only thing that caused reels to make noise were two turtles caught on live pilchards. There was also a sp. mackerel caught by mistake. I think they were checking their bait when they found that fish at the other end of their hook.
Some were slinging blue runner over the pier right and left for a spell using straw jigs and some kind of bobber I heard was called a mackerel bobber. That sounds like Pompano Pier slang.
Are you sure all those "mackerel" in the tanks were mackerel? I know at least one of them was a barracuda. Someone reached into their bucket, which was in the well, when a barracuda jumped out and nearly bit a guy right in the seat of the pants. I think there's no need to leave barracuda in the tanks is there? One of the kids playing in the wells could lose a finger reaching into the tank.
Also, at about 2pm, I heard a guy say the sewage is released from the inlet and kills the fishing for a few hours every day. Is this just a luckless fisherman crying the blues or is it true?

The guy that was using that rig; I sold that bobber to him for two bucks right when I left. Then I went to atlantic bait and tackle and bought two more. They cost 2$ for 2.Chief Wahoo wrote:Fished from about 11am till 4pm. my dad and i fished from 6 until 8:30am today, and from 7 to 11am yesterday. lots of pilchards at all times.
yesterday- I hooked one snook and due to my own stupidity i lost it. as it was running for a pillar i attemped to thumb the spool and got my line tangled up disabling the drag and the line broke.
today- at about 6:30 using a pilchard my dad hooked a small blue runner and as it was fighting, a big snook smacked it. after about 5 minutes, we beached it took a pic and released. at 8:30 I caught a snook using a live pilchard, we also beached and released this fish after a longer fight. It made about 4 or 5 runs for the pillars and I just barely got him turned. both snook were big, in the forty inch range mine was a bit bigger than my dad's. ive got pics of both fish that Ill post when I get home in just under a week.
