I need a little help guys, I know a canal full of carp and want to catch them on fly but idk what style of fly to use, what size and design do I use to catch them? I have lots of fly tying materials and dont mind tying a fly for them just what works best? thanks!!

i think you can use berry imitations or something that looks like weed , lol.. hydilla weed..stuff to make popper flys and paint it red .BOOM berry fly.

I was fishing for bluegills with a little red colored crappie jig (1/16 oz) and there was a school of carp nearby. To my surprise, I couldn't keep the carp off the jig !!! Let us know how you do.

Figure out what they are eating. in my area they love to dine on any berries that drop from trees into the water, floating berry fly

Another place where for what ever strange reason someone consistently seems to dump pop-corn in the water and it drives them crazy.. pop-corn fly with butter of course.

Krash I noticed you live in Cooper City, I am there often to fish the canal at palm ave and taft st, I tried a red berry fly that I tied with no success, they were munching on something in the water just not totally sure what, would you be interested in fishing together sometime around there to give me a little inside scoop?

lol why not!! how about tomorrow? I might head out, well actually I need a change of strategy cause the fly im using now does not work, so its a no go for tomorrow

Hmmm quite an old post.

Anyways I live on the canal you've mentioned and frequently mess with the carp. There are some real monsters in there...I would estimate 30 pounders (even subtracting the 40% fisherman's exaggeration factor, 18 lbs is still quite a nice fish on fly).

They are incredibly finicky and very easy to spook. If I had to suggest a fly, I would say any kind of small, flea or other dry fly. Drop it in front of them, move it so it sinks, and see what happens.

If that doesn't work, cheat and put bread on a small hook. I don't care if you guys don't think that's "real" fly fishing, it works. And those things put quite a bend in my 6 wt bass rod.

Be wary of the drainage pipes, if they run in there it's near impossible to get them out.

yes I finally did catch my first carp late last year, was 18 pounds, great fish to break the ice, hoping for many more, another good trick is to chum with cereal, they will eat that too, i buy cheap white colored cereal at win dixie then when they start to feed I toss in a small white floating fly that resembles the cereal.

Not sure if anybody is still watching this thread but, I've been chasing these carp in my local canals for a while now and still can't get them to bite. I've used red, green and purple berry and moss ball imitations with only one fish of a hundred to even eye my fly.
I can see them face-planted in the bottom eating but,I'm not sure what they are after.
Any ideas on a different color or fly to use??

I've heard that a one way is just give in lol if you can't beat'em join'em! Feed the ducks till they leave then come back to the fish. I haven't tried it personally so I can't say it works for sure but could be worth a try unless your feeding the whole flock

I have a video of me hooking one by mistake on a breadball trying for Chiclids to use for bait. They are beasts where I go though, played with him for a few minutes then popped him off. I have hooked at least 4 this way without fail. They love the breadball, I cover the whole circle hook!
