So here's how it's gonna work. You post a question and i will answer it to the best of my ability. I don't know everything there ever was about spearfishing but i have experience and know a few people that have been doing this for some time.
Hopefully it will be a great way to eliminate some people's doubts or misconceptions and we can share some great info.
Ask away!

Never a "good" idea to go by yourself especially if new at it whether free-diving or on SCUBA.
Do people go by themselves? Of course they do, is it a good idea? no
There are clubs in the area. There are several advantages to joining a club IMHO
1) Learn from more experienced people. Some of the more experianced divers enjoy being a mentor. I hated being an Instructor, which I was for a short time, but I loved being a mentor to someone who showed real interest and a willingness to listen.
2) Scheduled events keep everybody more active.
3) You have a pool of peeps to draw from for a dive buddy
The downside is there are club dues that you may or may nt be able to afford.
