Thick. Solid. Tight.
Who cares if it doesn't come out perfect.
It's not like there's wrap inspectors at the inlet or boat ramp checking the wraps to see if they're legit.

I don't care... But I might care if I pay someone to build my rod...lol

Just like him, I also care. But, I've done it long enough that cosmetic flaws aren't that big of a deal. Once the rod starts to get used it's going to get cement rash, stained with blood, scratched from being bundled with other rods, and countless other extremities. If having a perfect fishing rod is such a concern, you really shouldn't be fishing.

Re: Black n Yellow this one for me...
What would be general expectation when someone picks up his brand new custom rod from rod builder for the first time or when someone trying to buy his new custom rod? No one would pay top dollar for rod not looking perfect...
But what you are saying is correct for bridge rods... It would take only one good bite into tunnel to scratch new blank over cement rail...
I also saw people who take care of their rods like their new baby...specially boat fishing rods that would be used couple of times a year...lol

This is a sick looking wrap...You may never fish with it...
Two blanks? Why first and second ones look different?

The expectations don't need to be high. You can build nice rods without fancy wraps.kblue wrote:What would be general expectation when someone picks up his brand new custom rod from rod builder for the first time or when someone trying to buy his new custom rod? That's what a wrap is supposed to look like. I understand you've never seen one like that looks like that before. Can't see the threads huh?

Interesting that he covers the entire foot of the guide. You might consider that for future rods blue boy.

Raul that is a very nice spider right there. Old man still has his flow.
Building a rod is either as perfect as you can get it or do not build at all.
Richard you can have wraps that are so nicely wrapped you will think it is painted. Example a size A thread or a Madeira size P40.
I know first hand. I started building rods after I got my first custom and it was from Raul. Well that one was not his best build but exactly that inspired me to try myself and not long and I started putting out some badass stuff.

I think I am gonna add more thread on first two guides from the butt... It seems that those guides are most stressed during the bending.

In my opinion, those sick rods are art piece that needs to go to art gallery... It may be very interesting if there is art show of custom rods... Friend of mine (German) owns art gallery in Miami...

There was one of my grips pictured with a nice writeup in one of the issues of the Rod Builders Gild. No rod but a funky rasta grip.

Re: Black n Yellow this one for me...
This is the only custom I own. If I'm on a pier or fishing the beach this is the stick I'm always carrying. Flawless (and I mean flawless) wraps and great balance. Unfortunately, I think the old fart that made it for me has passed on or something. Either way I hadn't seen him panhandling Dania or Anglins for almost a year before I left so he's definitely gone. Too bad.....I'm gonna wear this stick out sooner or later and there's just no other place I could find workmanship like this.

I don't see anything wrong to bring this rod on a boat...I've seen even fancier rods on boat...Sandbar wrote:Sweet. You gonna use it on the boat?

But I won't bring it to bridge...and bridge is considered land...
The point I am trying to make here is there is no point in your saying...

Dang Raul that came out sweet
Richard that old fart is happy to see his creation still hooking up like 9000 miles accross the globe.
Blue - some scotchpad and a single coat of U40 permagloss once a year and a bridge rod will look like day one. Effort about 45 minutes and back fishing the next day.
